✧The Sliver Path✧

Rain hammered against the windows of Rica Academy long after dinner had ended. Thunder rolled across the mountains, and flashes of lightning illuminated the ancient towers that surrounded the school. Most students had already returned to their dormitories, while a few remained in the academy's study halls, finishing assignments before curfew. Near the library, tucked away behind several quiet corridors, was a small study room that students rarely used. The fireplace had gone cold hours ago, and only a single lantern illuminated the wooden table in the center of the room. Flora sat at that table with the ancient map spread open before her. Kira sat beside her, arms crossed. Across from them, Rocky leaned back in his chair while River quietly studied the faded lines drawn across the parchment. For several minutes, nobody spoke. The words written near the bottom of the map continued to bother them all. THE SILVER PATH. Finally, Flora broke the silence. "I think we should look for it." Kira immediately closed her book. "No." Rocky raised his hand. "I support Flora's terrible decisions." River glanced at him. "That explains a lot." Flora leaned forward and pointed toward the map. "This corridor doesn't exist on any modern map. The same symbol keeps appearing everywhere we go, and now we've found this. We can't ignore it." "We absolutely can," Kira replied. "In fact, I highly recommend ignoring it." Rocky nodded thoughtfully. "That's actually a very reasonable suggestion." Flora stared at him. "You're agreeing with Kira?" "Oh, no," Rocky said quickly. "I think this is an awful idea. I simply want to participate in the awful idea." Even River smiled at that. After a moment, he pointed to the faded section of the map. "The corridor is supposed to be between the East Wing and the old astronomy tower," he said quietly. "If the map is accurate, that's where we should start." Kira looked at him in disbelief. "You too?" River folded his arms. "I never said it was a good idea." Ten minutes later, the four of them were moving carefully through the academy corridors. The storm outside had only grown stronger. Rain lashed against the tall windows while the wind howled through cracks in the ancient stone walls. The academy felt different at night. Older. Stranger. The portraits seemed to watch them. The shadows stretched farther. Every footstep echoed. Flora walked at the front with the map in her hands while Rocky carried a lantern beside her. River followed quietly, and Kira remained slightly behind, still questioning every decision that had led her here. "I would like to officially state," Kira said, "that this was not my idea." Rocky nodded. "We'll mention that in the report after we die." "We are not going to die." "That sounds exactly like something people say before they die." Flora couldn't help smiling. Even during dangerous situations, Rocky somehow managed to make everyone laugh. Eventually, they reached the section marked on the map. The East Wing stood to their left. The old astronomy tower rose to their right. Between them was nothing but an ordinary stone wall. Kira crossed her arms. "Wonderful. Mystery solved." Rocky examined the wall carefully. "I can confirm that it is, in fact, a wall." "Thank you, Rocky," Flora said. "I do my best." River stepped closer. Unlike the others, he wasn't studying the entire wall. He focused on a small section near the bottom, running his fingers across the stone as though searching for something. Flora noticed his expression change. "What is it?" she asked. River brushed away years of dust. Hidden beneath the dirt was a carving. The same symbol. The circle crossed by three silver lines. For a moment, nobody moved. Flora felt her heartbeat quicken. "It's here." Kira stared at the symbol. "No." "It's the same one," Rocky whispered. River nodded. "This part of the wall is older than the others." Flora stepped forward. Before anyone could stop her, she placed her hand against the carving. Nothing happened. The storm continued outside. Thunder rolled. Rain fell. The corridor remained silent. Then the lantern flickered. Rocky looked down. "I didn't do anything." Cold air suddenly swept through the hallway. Kira immediately grabbed Flora's arm. "Did you feel that?" Before anyone answered, a loud click echoed inside the wall. The group froze. Another sound followed. Stone grinding against stone. Ancient mechanisms groaned somewhere deep inside the academy as the wall slowly began to move. Dust fell from above while the hidden doorway opened inch by inch. Nobody spoke. Nobody breathed. Beyond the opening stretched a narrow corridor swallowed by darkness. Strange silver symbols covered the walls, and old lantern holders lined the passage. The corridor from the map. The missing passage. The Silver Path. It was real. Rocky stared at the entrance. "Okay," he said quietly. "That is officially the strangest thing I've ever seen." River stepped closer, his face pale in the lantern light. "My grandfather was telling the truth." Kira shook her head. "We are absolutely not going in there." Flora looked at the darkness beyond the doorway. The symbols covered the walls again and again, repeating the same mark they had seen on the silver key. Someone had built this place. Someone had hidden it. And someone had wanted it forgotten. "We have to know what's inside," Flora said softly. "We really don't," Kira replied. "I would like the record to show that this is an extremely bad idea," Rocky added. Flora looked at him. "So you're staying here?" Rocky adjusted the lantern. "Oh, no. I'm definitely coming. I simply want future historians to know that I objected." River took the lantern from him and carefully raised it toward the entrance. The light traveled only a few feet before being swallowed by darkness. The corridor seemed endless. Then a voice echoed behind them. "What exactly are you doing?" All four students turned. Professor Graves stood at the end of the hallway. Her dark robes moved slightly in the cold air, and her expression revealed nothing. Flora's stomach dropped. Professor Graves walked slowly toward them. Her eyes moved from the opening in the wall to the ancient map in Flora's hands. Then his gaze settled on the symbol. For the briefest moment, something changed. Flora saw recognition. She saw concern. And beneath both of those emotions, she saw fear. The expression disappeared almost immediately, hidden once again behind the professor's calm face. "You four need to return to your dormitories," she said quietly. Flora swallowed. "Professor, we found—" "I know what you found." Her voice was gentle. That somehow made it worse. Behind them, the hidden corridor slowly began to close. Stone scraped against stone as the opening narrowed. The darkness retreated, the symbols vanished, and within moments only the ordinary wall remained. It was as if the Silver Path had never existed. Professor Graves continued staring at the wall. When she finally spoke again, her voice sounded tired. "The Silver Path was sealed for a reason." Flora took a step forward. "What reason?" For several seconds, the professor said nothing. Thunder shook the windows above them. The lantern flickered. The hallway remained silent. Finally, Professor Graves looked directly at Flora. "You should stop searching for things that were meant to stay lost." Her eyes lingered on her for a moment longer. Almost as if she recognized something. Or someone. Then she turned and walked away without another word. The four friends remained standing in the corridor long after she disappeared. Rocky was the first to speak. "Well," he said quietly, "that was terrifying." Kira nodded. River continued staring at the wall. Flora looked down at the ancient map still clutched in her hands. For the first time since arriving at Rica Academy, she realized something important. The academy wasn't simply hiding secrets. It was afraid of them.
