✧The Midnight Map✧

The discovery happened by accident. Which, in Flora's experience, was how most interesting discoveries happened. Three days after meeting River Darkwood, Flora found herself helping Mrs. Holloway organize returned books in the Library of Forgotten Things. Helping was perhaps not the right word. She had originally come looking for information about the silver symbol. Mrs. Holoway had immediately assigned her work instead. "You may shelve these," Mrs. Holoway said, placing a stack of books into Flora's arms. Flora stared at the pile. "There are at least thirty books here." "There are thirty-two." "That isn't better." Mrs. Holloway smiled and walked away. An hour later, Flora was standing on a rolling ladder near the highest shelves in the history section. Dust floated through golden beams of sunlight. Ancient books surrounded her on every side. Most students would have found the place boring. Flora loved it. As she slid the final book into place, something happened. A folded piece of parchment slipped from between two old volumes and drifted to the floor. Flora frowned. She climbed down the ladder and picked it up. The parchment looked ancient. The edges were worn and slightly torn. Carefully, she unfolded it. Then her eyes widened. It was a map. Not just any map. A map of Rica Academy. The parchment showed every building, tower, courtyard, garden, and pathway on the campus. Tiny handwritten notes filled the margins. Some sections were crossed out. Others were circled. Flora immediately looked around. Mrs. Holloway was nowhere in sight. Slowly, she rolled up the map and slid it into her bag. "I'm borrowing this," she whispered. The map did not object. That evening, Flora gathered Rocky, Kira, and River in one of the quieter study rooms. The moment she unrolled the parchment on the table, everyone leaned forward. "Please tell me that's not stolen," Kira said. "It's not stolen," Flora replied. Kira narrowed her eyes. Flora sighed. "Fine. It's temporarily relocated." Rocky grinned. "That's my favorite kind of stolen." River covered his face. "I've known you people for one week." Flora spread the map flat across the table. The parchment crackled softly. For a few moments, nobody spoke. "This is old," River finally said. "How old?" Rocky asked. River studied the faded ink. "Very old." "That is the least helpful answer possible. River ignored him. Kira pointed toward a section near the center of the map. "Wait." Everyone looked. "What?" Flora asked. Kira traced a finger across the parchment. "There." A narrow corridor had been drawn between two academy buildings. A corridor none of them recognized. Rocky frowned. "I've never seen that." "Neither have I," Flora admitted. River leaned closer. The expression on his face changed. Only slightly. But Flora noticed. "You know something," she said. River looked up. "No." "You do." "I don't." "You absolutely do." Rocky nodded. "She has a point." River sighed. "I know that corridor used to exist." The room went silent. Kira blinked. "Used to exist?" River nodded. "At least that's what I've heard." "Heard from who?" Flora asked. "My grandfather." That got everyone's attention. "Your grandfather went to Rica Academy?" Rocky asked. River nodded again. "So did my great-grandfather." Flora sat back. That was interesting. Very interesting. "My family has been connected to the academy for generations," River continued. "When I was younger, my grandfather used to tell stories about secret passages and hidden rooms." Rocky's eyes lit up. "Your grandfather sounds amazing." "He also told stories about giant squirrels." Rocky thought for a moment. "Still amazing." Even Kira laughed. Flora pointed at the corridor again. "So what happened to it?" River hesitated. For the first time since meeting him, he seemed genuinely uncertain. "I don't know," he admitted. "Grandfather always said it disappeared." Rocky blinked. "Buildings don't disappear." "That's exactly what I told him." "And?" River folded his arms. "He said Rica Academy isn't like other schools." Nobody had an answer to that. Because the more time they spent here... The more true it sounded. The group continued examining the map. Near the bottom corner, Flora noticed something strange. A symbol. Her stomach tightened. The same symbol. The one from the silver key. The one from the book in the library. Slowly, she pointed at it. "Please tell me everyone else sees that." The others looked. Their expressions immediately changed. "No way," Rocky whispered. Kira leaned closer. "That's impossible." River looked more serious than Flora had ever seen him. The symbol had been drawn beside the missing corridor. And beneath it, written in faded ink, were three words: THE SILVER PATH Nobody spoke. The room suddenly felt much colder. Finally, Flora broke the silence. "What is the Silver Path?" No one knew. Outside, thunder rumbled in the distance. The windows shook slightly. Rain began tapping against the glass. For a moment, the four friends simply stared at the ancient map lying between them. A missing corridor. A mysterious symbol. And a name that had never appeared anywhere else before. Flora felt that familiar spark of excitement. The feeling she always got when a mystery was about to begin. Only this time... Something told her they weren't just uncovering a secret. They were uncovering a secret someone had tried very hard to erase.
