The walk to Oakridge High that morning felt like a slow march toward an execution block.
Chloe clung to the strap of her battered canvas backpack, her heart doing erratic, painful flips against her ribs with every step she took. The cool morning air did nothing to soothe the burning anxiety in her chest.
She had managed to escape the sprawling Vanderbilt estate earlier under the pretense of hurrying off to class, leaving Ethan and Emily standing together in the marble foyer. But the ghost of Ethan’s taunt and that dark, calculating smirk followed her all the way to school.
He knew.
Ethan Sterling—the most dangerous, untamable guy at Oakridge High—knew that Chloe Miller, the quiet scholarship student who sat in the back of AP Literature, spent her afternoons wiping down countertops and carrying luggage for his rich fiancé.
If he opened his mouth, her entire world would crumble. The brutal rumors, the relentless mockery, the cruel social isolation from Emily Vanderbilt and her inner circle... it would destroy any chance Chloe had at finishing her senior year with her dignity intact.
When Chloe finally stepped through the heavy glass doors of Oakridge High, the usual chaotic noise greeted her. Metal lockers slammed shut, designer heels clicked against the polished floors, and loud laughter echoed down the hallways.
Chloe ducked her head, keeping her eyes fixed on the floor as she navigated through the sea of teenagers. Just get to your locker, she told herself repeatedly. Keep your head down. Maybe he won't say anything. Maybe he doesn't even care enough to ruin you.
"Did you see what Ethan was wearing yesterday?" a girl whispered near the water fountain.
"I heard his father bought him that black sports car just for passing midterms," another classmate chimed in.
Chloe swallowed hard, hugging her worn notebook tightly against her chest.
"Chloe! Hey, wait up!"
Chloe stopped near the main staircase as her classmate, Sarah, rushed over. Sarah was a chronic gossip who always knew everyone's business before it even happened.
"Did you hear the news?" Sarah asked in an urgent whisper, her eyes wide with excitement. "Emily Vanderbilt has been bragging all morning in the girls' lounge. She said her family and the Sterlings officially finalized the engagement arrangements over dinner last night. She’s already calling herself the future Mrs. Sterling!"
Chloe’s chest tightened, a strange, bitter knot forming in her stomach. "Right... good for her."
"Good for her?" Sarah rolled her eyes. "Ethan Sterling is a menace, Chloe. Sure, he’s gorgeous, but he’s utterly ruthless. He broke up with Madison last month via a text message sent by his driver! The guy doesn't have a heart. And now Emily gets to parade him around like a trophy."
Before Chloe could answer, the hallway suddenly went quiet. The thick crowd of students parted like the Red Sea.
Emily Vanderbilt had arrived.
Decked out in a pastel tweed blazer, a tailored skirt, and thigh-high boots, Emily glided down the hallway like she owned the entire school. Flanking her left and right were her two main followers, Chloe’s classmates Jessica and Mia, carrying designer coffee cups and nodding eagerly at everything Emily said.
"Make way, please," Jessica sneered, shoving a younger student out of the path.
Emily stopped right in front of Chloe’s locker, her icy blue eyes locking onto Chloe with immediate contempt. She crossed her arms, scanning Chloe’s worn sneakers and faded jeans with pure disdain.
"Well, well. If it isn't the quiet little ghost," Emily purred, her voice carrying across the silent hallway. Classmates immediately began pausing, pulling out their phones, sensing drama. "You look exhausted today, Chloe. Did you spend all night studying, or were you just dreaming about a life you’ll never have?"
Jessica and Mia burst into high-pitched giggles.
Chloe clenched her fists inside her jacket pockets, forcing her expression to remain completely neutral. "I was just trying to get to my locker, Emily."
"Miss Emily to you, Emily corrected sharply, stepping closer so only Chloe could hear her next words. "Don't forget your place, Miller. You might share a hallway with me here, but the moment 3:30 PM hits, you're just the help. If I see a single speck of dust in my dressing room today, I’ll make sure my mother cuts your pay in half.
Chloe’s blood ran cold, but she swallowed her pride, lowering her gaze. "Understood."
"Good girl," Emily smirked, turning back to her friends. "Now, where is Ethan? He promised he’d walk me to first period."
"Looking for me, princess?"
The deep, velvety voice sent a sudden, electric shock straight down Chloe’s spine.
Ethan Sterling emerged from around the corner, looking effortlessly breathtaking. His private school blazer hung loosely over his broad shoulders, his dark tie was lazily unbuttoned at the collar, and his messy dark hair tumbled across his forehead in artful ruin. He casually slipped a sleek, silver designer lighter between his long fingers, flipping the metallic lid open and shut with a soft, rhythmic click-click.
He didn't look like a student; he looked like a storm wrapped in a tailored uniform.
Emily’s hostile expression instantly melted into a bright, sugary sweet smile. She rushed over, wrapping her arms around his arm. "Ethan! There you are! I was telling everyone about our dinner last night."
Ethan didn't glance at Emily. His dark, intensely sharp hazel eyes were locked directly onto Chloe.
He slowly walked forward, dragging Emily along with him, until he was standing directly in front of Chloe’s open locker. The sheer height and presence of him seemed to swallow up all the air in the narrow hallway.
"Ethan, babe, let's go," Emily whined, pulling his arm. "Why are you looking at her? She’s nobody.
A dangerous, lazy smirk spread slowly across Ethan’s lips. He leaned his shoulder against Chloe’s locker, his scent—a intoxicating mix of rich cedarwood, crisp rain, and mint—completely enveloping her.
"Nobody?" Ethan murmured, his voice low enough to make Chloe’s heart hammer violently against her ribs. "I don't know, Emily... I think Miller here is actually very interesting."
Gasps rippled through the surrounding classmates. Sarah’s mouth fell wide open. Jessica and Mia exchanged bewildered looks.
Emily’s face flushed a deep, ugly red. "Interesting? She's a nobody who wears rags!"
Ethan ignored Emily completely. He reached out with his free hand, his long, warm fingers lightly brushing against the strap of Chloe’s backpack before tucking a loose lock of honey-brown hair behind her burning ear. The touch was soft, deliberate, and undeniably possessive.
Chloe froze, her entire body going rigid as electricity zings through her veins.
"You dropped your pen in the driveway this morning... Chloe," Ethan whispered, dropping his voice to a dangerous, intimate purr as he slid a sleek black pen into her jacket pocket.
The implicit threat hung heavily in the air between them: I can tell them right now. I hold your fate in my hands.
Chloe’s eyes flashed with sudden, fiery defiance. "Keep it, Sterling. I don't need anything from you."
The entire hallway went dead silent. Nobody talked back to Ethan Sterling. Nobody.
Instead of getting angry, Ethan let out a quiet, dark laugh that made Chloe’s skin prickle with goosebumps. His gaze burned into hers with an intensity that made her knees feel dangerously weak.
"Oh, but you do," Ethan whispered, leaning in closer so his lips almost brushed her jawline. "You're going to need a lot of things from me before this year is over."
He straightened up, smoothly pulling his arm out of Emily’s tight grip. Without another word, he turned on his heel and strolled down the corridor, leaving an enraged Emily, a room full of stunned classmates, and a breathless Chloe standing in his wake.
As Ethan’s towering figure disappeared around the corner, Emily threw a deadly glare at Chloe, spun around on her high heels, and stormed off with her entourage following close behind. The hallway slowly erupted back into loud whispers and speculative glances, but Chloe forced herself to ignore every single one of them.
He’s completely insane, Chloe thought, her breathing ragged as she slammed her locker door shut and practically ran into her first-period classroom. He is a bored, sociopathic rich boy playing a sick game.
She ducked into the very back row, pulled out her heavy textbook, and buried her face deep behind the pages. She tried to focus on the text, but the printed words blurred together before her eyes. Her entire body was still trembling from the residual electric current of his touch.
I can't do this, she told herself fiercely, gripping the edges of the textbook until her knuckles turned white. I cannot get tangled up in his world.
Her mind drifted straight to her family her mother’s worn, tired hands counting sparse bills at the kitchen table, the unpaid utility notices stacking up by the door, and the sheer sacrifice it took just to keep a roof over their heads. Chloe wasn't at Oakridge High to chase after handsome, arrogant billionaires or get dragged into elite teenage drama. She was here to survive, graduate, and pull her family out of poverty. She was going to give them the comfortable, peaceful life they deserved—no matter how many floors she had to scrub or how many arrogant insults she had to swallow.
She didn't have room for Ethan Sterling’s games. She didn't have room for a rich, spoiled brat who thought he owned the world just because his last name was on the school library.
I'll just avoid him, Chloe resolved, taking a long, shaky breath. At 3:30 PM, I do my job, keep my head down, and stay out of his sight. He'll get bored in a week.
But as the morning bell rang to start class, Chloe reached into her jacket pocket to pull out a pencil and her fingers brushed against the cool, smooth metal of the black pen Ethan had slipped inside.
Attached to the clip was a small, hand-folded piece of paper she hadn't noticed before.
Heart hammering in her chest, Chloe unfolded it under her desk. Written in sharp, masculine handwriting was a single line:
“Library. 3:00 PM today. Come alone, or Emily finds out before your shift starts.”
Chloe’s blood ran ice-cold.
He wasn't going to get bored. The game hadn't even officially begun.
