Chapter Sixteen

673 Words
Alison walked into the living room, her heart racing. She was waiting to hear what he would say. Nicholas was leaning against the window, arms crossed over his chest, his grey eyes fixed on her as she entered. His face was blank, so serious. Sit, he said, pointing to the chair in front of him. She hesitated for a moment before sitting down. The silence was oppressive. Nicolas finally spoke, his voice cold and hard. "You have tested my patience and it’s over. There are rules to live by if you want to stay alive." Alison’s eyebrows furrowed. "Rules?" What rules? "You speak only when necessary," Nicholas said, "Don’t go anywhere without my permission." Get out of my way, and more importantly..." He leaned forward, his eyes boring into hers and her stomach twisted. "Don’t ask questions." He closed his eyes, his disappointment rising to the surface. "I can’t ask questions?" How am I supposed to know what’s going on if you don’t tell me? "That’s none of your business," he said. Your job is to follow orders. I don’t need to explain anything to you." Alison’s fists clenched on her knees as anger boiled up inside her. "I’m not a child, Nicholas. I need you to know what’s going on” "I can treat you however I want," he said, his voice cold. "You are alive only because I let you. Don’t forget." His words stung, but she wouldn’t back down. "You’re unbelievable," she muttered under her breath. "What was that?" he asked, his voice low and menacing. "Nothing," she said quickly, though her tone gave her away. Nicholas stood up, his eyes never leaving hers. "You dare not disobey me, Alison, or I’ll make sure you regret it. Do you understand me?" "Yes," she said through her teeth. "Yes, what?" he asked. "Yes, I understand," she said, her voice even but firm. "Good," he said, his tone a little softer. Alison’s heart was racing but she didn’t look away, determined not to show her fear. "Anything else, boss?" He narrowed his eyes but didn’t answer, just turned and walked away, his back stiff. "Don’t get yourself into trouble, Alison. That’s all you need to remember." He headed for the door, leaving her in the living room, her emotions in chaos. She was feeling angry, scared and something else she couldn’t quite put her finger on. She let the door close behind her and breathed. She had to be more careful around Nicholas, but she couldn’t shake the anger. He confused her a lot. She didn't like him a bit but for the couple of days he always seemed to be on her mind. His strangeness, his mysterious behavior intrigued her Everytime. That was the reason she wanted him to open up even though she clearly knew what was happening. She already knew they were on a run from Adrian. The name alone sent chills down her spine . She didn't even know how Adrian looked like but he already terrified her. She could tell Nicholas wasn't afraid of Adrian through what she had observed. She knew it was all about her and somehow she knew Nicholas kept her alive due to a certain ‘Amelia’. Though she tried to ignore it, sometimes she finds herself drifting back to the conversation she overheard between Nicholas and Luke. She hasn't seen Luke since the cabin, even though she didn't like him. She wondered how he was doing. Nicholas needed distance from her but it was getting difficult. She was just being difficult and really needed to know her place. He knew he made a huge mistake for not killing her. He wondered why he didn't kill her. Deep down he knew the reason although he tried to pretend that wasn't it. Nicholas didn't feel guilty for anything at all, he had killed so many people and done so many bad things yet he didn't feel guilty. When he felt guilt on seeing the bruise on Alison's hand he knew deep down there was trouble.
