Episode 8 — Dangerous Things

460 Words
Rain poured heavily over Noctyra after midnight, drowning the city beneath silver darkness. The gala had ended hours ago. But Kael’s anger had not. Inside his private office at Blackthorn Estate, documents lay scattered across the desk untouched while whiskey burned slowly in his glass. Dante Moreau. Thirty-six. Rival political bloodline. Known manipulator. Womanizer. Ambitious. Dangerous. Kael hated him already. A quiet knock interrupted his thoughts. “Enter.” Seraphina walked inside without waiting. Still wearing the black velvet dress from the gala. Still beautiful enough to create problems. “You left early,” she said casually. Kael didn’t answer immediately. Instead, his gaze moved slowly over her face before returning to the documents. “You danced with Dante Moreau.” She frowned. “And?” “He’s not someone you should involve yourself with.” A laugh escaped her lips. “That sounds like jealousy.” Kael finally looked at her again. And something in his expression made her heartbeat slow. “I don’t get jealous,” he said quietly. “No?” “No. I eliminate problems.” The atmosphere shifted instantly. Dark. Heavy. Dangerously intimate. Seraphina walked closer to his desk slowly. “You know,” she murmured, “normal people would simply admit they were annoyed.” “I’m not normal.” “No,” she whispered. “You definitely aren’t." Silence stretched between them. Thunder echoed outside. Kael watched her carefully as she leaned against the edge of his desk. Too close again. Always too close lately. “You scare people,” she said softly. “Good.” “You scare me too.” For the first time that night— Kael’s expression changed slightly. Not softer. Worse. More honest. “Then stay away from me.” The words should have sounded like a warning. Instead— They sounded almost painful. Seraphina swallowed slowly. Because suddenly she realized something terrifying. Kael wasn’t warning her for her safety. He was warning her about himself. Before either of them could speak again— A gunshot exploded somewhere outside the estate. Both froze instantly. Kael moved first. In one swift motion, he grabbed Seraphina’s wrist and pulled her behind him protectively while reaching for the gun hidden beneath his suit jacket. Every trace of warmth vanished from his face immediately. Only the monster remained. Guards flooded the hallway outside. Chaos erupted downstairs. Kael’s voice turned ice cold. “Stay in this room.” Seraphina stared at him, pulse racing. “Kael—” “Don’t argue.” Then he disappeared into the darkness with a gun in his hand and murder in his eyes. And for the first time in years— Seraphina truly understood why powerful men feared Kael Vespera more than death itself. -- Episode End
