When Alex saw Gwen’s red hair disappear under the rubble, he didn’t think. Just leapt. And immediately regretted it, because the next thing he knew he was rolling head over heels down a mountain of debris. He tumbled against the ground as grime filled his mouth. Although rocks scraped his skin, Alex reached for something to break his fall. Got more cuts. It slowed his descent but now he was sliding sideways. Right toward the white pit. Alex made a desperate attempt to change direction. But the collapsing building had other ideas. Keeping him on a collision course with the Blank Canvas. The temperature dropped. He felt the chasm’s cold hands reaching for him. Soon he’d be unable to move. Trapped forever in the white. He imagined Mom. Wondering where he was. Searching. Her heart growing
