Chapter 13, Poetry
Keith's POV
We had our second date coming. I was so excited for this. I had third or fourth dates but then they tended to leave me after that. This date had to go perfectly. For me. I worked hard to impress a princess. It worked then she left me.
I worked hard to impress Rachel who liked classical music. That never worked out. She left me to. Rachel was the last girl I had been serious over. I had tried to write classical music for her before as well.
I for some reason was scared inside to think that Iris might leave me. And move on when she became world famous because of her singing talent? Would she forget all about me?
Leave me for someone like Elvis who had more money then I did? Sure he was older but he had lots more to offer than I did right now. Most women were crazy about Elvis.
I wondered how I could make this second date be perfect for Iris. I asked my buddies for ideas all week. But that brought out curiousness.
Then they wanted to know if things ended with Iris could they ask her out when it did. I told them it was not going to end with Iris. And they better back off. I humiliated myself before for a girl. I was sure I was going to do it again.

"Hi Keith!" someone greets me.
It was Rachel.
I have not saw her since we dated last year.
"Hey how have you been?" I ask her.
"Getting ready for college. I am going to major in music" she tells me. She smiles her blond hair was longer since I last saw her.
"Sounds great. I wish you well" I tell her.
"Say, you know prom will be coming up before you know it. I do not have time for a steady. Do you have a date? We could go but please understand me. As friends" she asks me.
"Oh, I am flattered Rachel. But I am seeing someone. We are getting pretty serious" I explain to her.
"Good for you Keith. I am happy for you" she tells me. "are you writing her a song to?" she jokes.
I feel my cheeks turn red.
"No, I gave that up after we broke up" I chuckle.
I see Iris coming with Laurie down the hall.
"See you around Keith. Too bad about prom" she replies before she leaves me standing there.
"Was that Rachel?" asks Laurie.
"Yes, that was Rachel" I answer her.
"Who is Rachel? Do I know her?" asks Iris curiously.
"Rachel is one of Keith's former girlfriend's" says Laurie.
"Oh" says Iris softly.
"An ex!" I tell her. I touch her arm. "let me take these books for you" I say to Iris. "can I give you a ride home?" I offer.
"Sure" she says with a nod and a smile.
I offer my free hand for her to take in mine. We walked to my car.
"What did Rachel want?" wonders Laurie.
"She was wondering about prom. She asked me. I told her no I was not needing a date" I tell Laurie. "she is used to me being single I think. She often used to take me for granted"
"I forgot prom is coming up" says Laurie. "I hope someone asks me soon"
"I hope so to" says Iris. "you are so pretty. Someone will snatch you up" she promises.
Was it too soon for me to ask Iris to the prom? When we had only been on two dates so far? Well, this was going to be date number two this weekend.
Should I ask before some other guy did it?
We get into the car.

"Keith you are very quiet. Even for you" laughs Laurie.
"I have a lot on my mind is all' I tell her.
I was not going to ask Iris to prom with Laurie in the car with us. I wanted it to be special. Not rushed to. I feel Iris take my free hand into hers as I drove us home. I smile over at her. Then we soon pull into my drive way. I walk Iris home from there.
"Can I ask you something?" I begin as we stand at the doorstep together.
"Sure, you can ask me anything Keith" she answers me.
"Can I ask, if you would care to accompany me to prom?" I softly ask her. "I know it is soon. Sudden. But I can't see myself wanting to take anyone else" I ramble out.
"I would love to go to prom with you" she says. "prom is only a few weeks away" she reminds me.
"Yes it would seem so" I chuckle.
I lean in kissing her. "See you this weekend for our date" I tell her.
She nods then smiles before heading into the house.
I grin. I had a date for prom. I had to plan our second date before planning our romantic prom date. I head up to my room. After saying hello to my mother and get to work on some ideas.
I better get my home work done. Or I was not going to be attending the prom. I open my book. I notice a note falls out. It was from Iris. She wrote me a note. I smile as I unfold it.
It read:
My thoughts of you are never ending.
Your always on my mind.
You have a way with words.
Time after time.
If you feel the same as I do.
And this poem makes you smile.
I'm glad that I wrote it.
I am not very good at them.
But you make me write them all the while.
I laugh at the end. Then smile. I place the poem in my desk so my siblings would not read it. It was a sweet poem. I loved it. She was thinking of me as I was of her. I reread it once more.
She was not to bad at poem writing. They could be tricky to do. Before I knew it the next day was here. It was time for our date. I planned to take her to dinner and a movie. But with a movie not much talking. I did actually enjoy talking to her.
Maybe coffee after the movie. If we had time. So, we could talk to. I pick up Iris at the door. I ring the doorbell. Her sister answers. Smiling at me. Letting me come inside.

"Hi" she greets me.
"Hey kiddo!" I answer.
"Tell Danny we could double date you know. Any time" she says to me.
"I will let him know" I chuckle.
Iris came down the stairs. She was all dressed up for me.
"Hi Keith" she greets me.
"Hi Iris this will be our second date. Are you ready?" I ask her. She nods.
"Mom see you later I am going out with Keith" she tells her mom.
Then we head out on our way. I drive to a place in town that had the best Italian food. We chat and enjoy a pizza with some soda. Then we go to the movies. They were playing Swamp Thing. That scared her a bit. She kept jumping into my arms.
"Sorry I always get jumpy at these kinds of things" she laughs softly to me. She nearly spilled her soda on me.
"I will keep that in mind for next time" I chuckle.
After the movie I take her for a coffee. We sit in the booth together.
"You spoil me Keith" laughs Iris.
"I wanted some time to talk with you to. You can't really talk during the show" I remind her.
"True" she adds.
"Sorry for asking you to prom so soon" I mention.
"Why did you change your mind?" she worries. Her face falls.
"No, you were on the spot that was all. And I do not want you to feel pressured" I tell her.
She was enjoying a tea. I had a coffee.
I tap my foot nervously on the floor.
"I want to go with you. I did mean it like that" she tells me.
"I get what you mean. Everything happens so fast. But it does not feel rushed. It all feels right to me" i softly tell her.
"You are right about that. This between us does not feel rushed" she agrees with me.
I place my hand over hers at the table.

"You have a date. And a third one if you want it" I tease.
She grins. She nods.
"Can I ask you one more thing?" I say to her.
"Sure"
"Would you like to go steady with me?" I can't help but say it.
Her eyes are surprised. She grins.
"Yes, I would love to go steady" she answers as she squeezes my hand in hers.
I had a girlfriend. A steady one. At long last who knew I would find her right in my home town to?
