The Offer (Part 2)

Lena couldn't take her eyes off the contract. The amount written on the page seemed unreal. More money than she had ever seen in her entire life Enough to pay every hospital bill. Enough to save her mother. Enough to finally breathe again. But nothing came for free. Especially not from a man like Ethan Cole. Slowly, she looked up. "What exactly would I have to do?" Ethan leaned back in his chair. For the first time since she arrived, a hint of satisfaction crossed his face. Not because she had agreed. But because she was finally considering it. "You'll play the role of my girlfriend." "Publicly?" "Yes." "Only publicly?" His gaze remained steady. "For the most part." Lena immediately regretted asking. "What does that mean?" "We'll attend events together." "Dinners." "Business functions." "Family gatherings." "You'll accompany me whenever necessary." Lena frowned. "And in private?" "In private, we behave like two adults fulfilling a contract." The answer somehow made her feel better. And worse. She wasn't sure why. Ethan slid another document toward her. "The rules." Lena picked it up. Her eyes scanned the first page. Rule #1: The relationship must remain confidential. Rule #2: No discussing contract details with anyone. Rule #3: Always maintain appearances in public. Rule #4: No unauthorized interviews. Rule #5: No romantic involvement. Lena blinked. Then read the final rule again. "No romantic involvement?" "Correct." She looked at him. "You actually wrote that?" "Yes." "You think I'm going to fall in love with you?" Ethan's expression remained annoyingly calm. "I think emotions complicate arrangements." Lena rolled her eyes. "Trust me. That's not a problem." For a second, Ethan's lips almost curved upward. Almost. Then the moment disappeared. "Good." The man was impossible. Lena continued reading. The more she read, the more questions she had. "What happens after the contract ends?" "We separate." "Just like that?" "Just like that." She frowned. "No explanation?" "No." "No friendship?" "No." "No contact?" "No." The simplicity of his answers irritated her. Everything about him felt cold. Calculated. Like he had built walls around himself and never allowed anyone inside. "You're a very strange person." Ethan raised an eyebrow. "I've been called worse." "I believe it." To her surprise, he actually laughed. A real laugh. Short. Quiet. But genuine. For a brief second, he looked human. Then the cold CEO returned. And the moment vanished. A knock interrupted them. Claire entered carrying coffee. She placed a cup in front of Ethan and another before Lena. "Thank you." Claire smiled politely. Then left. As the door closed, Lena picked up her coffee. One sip. And her eyes widened. It was delicious. Much better than the cheap coffee she drank every day. Ethan noticed. "You like it." "It's good." "It's imported." "Of course it is." Another small smile appeared. Again, it disappeared quickly. Minutes passed. Neither spoke. Lena stared at the contract. Ethan watched her. Patiently. Waiting. The silence became unbearable. Finally, she spoke. "Why me?" Ethan's gaze sharpened. "I already explained." "No." She shook her head. "You explained why I fit your requirements." "But there must be hundreds of women who fit those requirements." Ethan remained quiet. For several seconds. Then he answered. "You didn't ask for anything." "What?" "When my team investigated candidates, most wanted something." "Money." "Fame." "Connections." "Power." His eyes met hers. "You only wanted your mother to survive." Lena froze. Something about those words felt different. Softer. More personal. And for the first time, she wondered if Ethan wasn't as heartless as everyone claimed. Just lonely. The thought surprised her. Meanwhile, Ethan found himself studying her again. Most people became nervous around him. Others became greedy. Some tried to impress him. Lena did none of those things. She challenged him. Questioned him. Argued with him. And somehow... He found it refreshing. Dangerously refreshing. Which was exactly why Rule Number Five existed. No emotional attachment. No feelings. No complications. Because Ethan knew better than anyone what emotions could do. And he had no intention of repeating the mistakes of the past. "Miss Cruz." Lena looked up. "Yes?" "I need an answer." Her stomach tightened. The answer. Everything came back to that. She thought about her mother. The hospital. The surgery. The bills. The endless stress. Then she looked around the luxurious office. h At the expensive furniture. At the breathtaking view. At the billionaire sitting across from her. Their worlds couldn't be more different. Yet somehow fate had placed them in the same room. Waiting for the same decision. "How long?" "One year." "Twelve months?" "Yes." "And after that?" "We walk away." Simple. Clean. Final. Lena hated how much it sounded like a business deal. But maybe that's exactly what it was. Her phone suddenly rang. She glanced at the screen. Hospital. Fear immediately gripped her heart. "Excuse me." She answered. "Hello?" The nurse's voice sounded urgent. "Miss Cruz, your mother fainted this morning." Lena shot to her feet. "What happened?" "She's stable now." "But the doctor wants to discuss moving the surgery date sooner." Her blood ran cold. Sooner meant more money. Sooner meant more pressure. Sooner meant she was running out of time. "I'll be there immediately." The call ended. Lena stood frozen. Panic overwhelmed her. She needed money. Now. Not next month. Not next year. Now. Ethan quietly watched everything. Then he spoke "Your mother?" Lena nodded. "She needs surgery sooner." The room fell silent. And for the first time... The contract stopped feeling like a choice. It started feeling like her only option. Lena stood motionless in the center of Ethan Cole's office. The phone was still in her hand. Her heart pounded so loudly she could barely hear her own thoughts. Her mother's surgery had been moved forward. Which meant one thing. She had run out of time. For months she had been fighting. Working. Praying. Hoping that somehow everything would work out. But hope didn't pay hospital bills. Hope didn't save lives. And right now, hope wasn't enough. The only thing standing between her mother and the surgery she desperately needed was a signature. One signature. One decision. One contract. Ethan remained silent. He didn't pressure her. Didn't rush her. Didn't try to convince her. He simply waited. As if he already knew what her answer would be. Lena hated that. She hated how powerless she felt. She hated how desperate she had become. Most of all, she hated that he was right. Slowly, she placed the phone on the desk. Then she looked directly into Ethan's eyes. "If I agree..." His expression remained unreadable. "...you'll pay for everything?" "Yes." "My mother's surgery." "Yes." "Her treatment." "Yes." "Every bill?" "Every bill." Lena swallowed hard. "No tricks?" "No tricks." "No hidden conditions?" "No." For several seconds she stared at him. Trying to determine whether she could trust him. But Ethan Cole was impossible to read. His face revealed nothing. His eyes revealed even less. Finally, she looked down at the contract. Then picked up the pen. The moment felt strangely heavy. Like her entire future rested on a single movement. Maybe it did. She signed her name. Lena Cruz. The ink dried almost immediately. And just like that... Everything changed. Ethan watched quietly as she signed. A strange feeling settled in his chest. Relief. The contract was complete. The problem was solved. Exactly as planned. Yet something about this arrangement felt different. Dangerously different. Perhaps it was the way she challenged him. Or the way she looked at him without fear. Whatever it was... He couldn't afford to think about it. Not now. Not ever. Because feelings had a way of destroying everything. And Ethan had learned that lesson years ago. The hard way. Claire entered the office moments later. Ethan handed her the signed contract. "It's done." Claire smiled. "Congratulations, Miss Cruz." Lena wasn't sure whether congratulations was the right word. It felt more like she had just signed away her normal life. Claire placed another folder before her. "What's this?" "Your schedule." Lena blinked. "My what?" "The next three weeks. She opened it. And nearly fainted. Photo shoots. Charity galas. Business dinners. Fashion events. Interviews. Luxury brand launches. There were dozens of activities. "What is all this?" Claire smiled sympathetically. "Welcome to Ethan Cole's world." Lena suddenly missed her old life. An hour later, she left the building. But she wasn't alone. A black luxury SUV waited outside. Several security guards stood nearby. And a driver held the door open. Lena stared. "This is for me?" "Yes, Miss Cruz." Her eyes widened. "This seems excessive." "Mr. Cole insists." Before she could protest, the driver added: "The hospital first." Lena immediately climbed inside. Nothing else mattered. She needed to see her mother. St. Mary's Hospital When Lena arrived, she hurried through the hallways. The nurses smiled when they saw her. Some looked surprised by the expensive vehicle outside. But Lena ignored them. She rushed into Room 312. Her mother looked up. "There you are." Lena immediately hugged her. Carefully. Gently. As though afraid she might break. Maria smiled. "What's wrong?" For a moment, Lena couldn't speak. She was overwhelmed. Relieved. Terrified. Hopeful. All at once. Finally, tears filled her eyes. "Mom..." Maria frowned. "What happened?" Lena laughed through her tears. "The surgery." "What about it?" "It's happening." Confusion crossed Maria's face. "What do you mean?" "We can afford it." Silence. Complete silence. Maria stared. Then stared some more. Finally she whispered: "How?" Lena hesitated. She couldn't tell her about the contract. Not yet. "I found a job." "A job?" "Yes." Maria looked unconvinced. "What kind of job pays that much?" Lena forced a smile. "A very complicated one." Meanwhile... Back at Cole Enterprises. Ethan stood alone inside his office. Looking out over the city. The contract was signed. The problem was solved. So why wasn't he satisfied? His phone rang. The caller ID made his jaw tighten. His grandmother. He answered. "Grandmother." "When do I meet her?" Straight to the point. As always. Ethan sighed. "Good afternoon to you too." "You finally have a girlfriend." "Allegedly." "Bring her to dinner." His eyes narrowed. "What?" "Tonight." "That's impossible." "No." His grandmother laughed. "It's perfect." "Grandmother—" "Tonight, Ethan." The call ended. He stared at the phone. Annoyed. Of course she would do this. Of course. Later that evening.. Lena's phone rang. Unknown Number. She answered. "Hello?" "Ethan Cole." Her heart skipped. "What now?" Silence. Then... "Dinner." "What?" "Tonight." Her eyes widened. "Tonight?" "My grandmother wants to meet you." Lena nearly dropped the phone. "You can't be serious." "I am." "I just signed the contract today!" "I know." "I don't even know how to act like your girlfriend." "Neither do I." She paused. Then frowned. "That's not reassuring." For the first time, Ethan laughed. A genuine laugh. Low. Warm. Unexpected. And somehow... It made Lena smile Only for a second. Then reality returned. "What time?" "Seven." "And if I refuse?" "Too late." Before she could answer, the call ended. Lena stared at the phone. Speechless. Tonight she would meet Ethan Cole's family. And she hadn't even survived her first day as his fake girlfriend. What could possibly go wrong? Unfortunately for Lena... The answer was: Everything. . 🔥💕
