The clock tower

696 Words
Ava, Ethan, and Nova arrived at the old clock tower just before midnight. The tower loomed above them, its stone walls casting long shadows in the moonlight. Ava felt a shiver run down her spine as she looked up at the tower. Something about this felt off. "Are you sure this is a good idea?" Nova asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Ava nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. "We have to know what Phoenix is planning," she said. Ethan nodded, his eyes locked on the tower. "Let's do this." The three of them crept inside the tower, their footsteps echoing off the stone walls. As they climbed the stairs, Ava felt a sense of unease growing inside her. Suddenly, they heard a noise above them. Footsteps, light and cautious. Ava's heart skipped a beat. "It's Phoenix," she whispered. Ethan and Nova nodded, their eyes locked on the stairs above them. As they watched, a figure emerged from the shadows. Tall, with piercing blue eyes and jet-black hair. "Welcome, Ava," Phoenix said, his voice low and smooth. "I've been waiting for you." Ava felt a shiver run down her spine. There was something about Phoenix that seemed off, something that didn't quite add up. But she didn't have time to think about it now. Phoenix was holding a small device in his hand, a device that looked suspiciously like a bomb. "What's that?" Ava asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Phoenix smiled, his eyes glinting with amusement. "Just a little surprise I have in store for you," he said. And with that, he pressed a button on the device, and the room was filled with a blinding light. Ava felt a searing pain in her eyes as the light enveloped her. She stumbled backwards, her hands flying up to cover her face. Ethan and Nova were by her side in an instant, their voices shouting in her ears. "Ava, are you okay?" Ethan yelled. Ava nodded, her eyes streaming with tears. "I...I think so," she stammered. As the light began to fade, Ava saw that Phoenix was nowhere to be seen. But on the wall in front of her, a message was scrawled in bold letters: "You'll never stop me." Ava's heart sank. What did Phoenix have planned? Suddenly, Nova gasped. "Look!" she exclaimed, pointing to the floor. Ava and Ethan turned to see a small, intricately carved box lying on the ground. It was adorned with strange symbols and markings. "What is it?" Ava asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Nova shook her head. "I don't know, but I think we should open it." Ethan hesitated. "Are you sure that's a good idea?" But Nova was already opening the box. Inside, they found a small, crystal orb. As soon as Nova touched the orb, the room was filled with a blinding flash of light. Ava felt herself being lifted off the ground, felt herself being pulled towards the orb. And then, everything went black. When Ava came to, she was lying on the floor, her head throbbing with pain. Ethan and Nova were kneeling beside her, their faces etched with concern. "Ava, can you hear me?" Ethan asked, his voice shaking with worry. Ava nodded, trying to sit up. But a wave of dizziness washed over her, forcing her back onto the floor. Nova put a hand on her shoulder. "Don't try to move," she said. "You've been out for a few minutes." Ava's eyes scanned the room, trying to remember what had happened. And then she saw it - the crystal orb, lying on the floor a few feet away. "What...what is that thing?" Ava asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Ethan's face was grim. "I don't know, but I think it's the key to unlocking Phoenix's plan." Nova nodded. "We need to take it to someone who can analyze it." Ava nodded, trying to sit up again. This time, she made it, albeit shakily. As they stumbled out of the clock tower, Ava couldn't shake the feeling that they were in over their heads. But she was determined to see this through, no matter what dangers lay ahead.
