Chapter Three

The coffee shop was a welcome distraction, but the events of the morning clung to her like a shadow. Amara nursed a hot cup of coffee, the steam warming her face, as she replayed the scene in her mind. The golden eyes, the raw power emanating from him, the single, whispered word: "Mine." It was the kind of thing you read in fantasy novels, not what you saw on the streets of Apata Yakuba. She tried to rationalize it. Maybe he was a cult leader. Maybe it was a prank. But the primal fear she had felt, the way he had moved—it was too real. The memory of his gaze, both terrifying and intense, was etched in her mind. She pulled out her phone, her fingers hovering over the search bar. What would she even type? "Man with glowing eyes"? "Primal growl"? It all sounded ridiculous. Still, she felt a need to understand. She pulled up the news and searched for any strange incidents from the night before. Nothing. Just the usual reports of traffic and local politics. It was as if no one else had seen what she saw, or perhaps they had simply chosen to ignore it. The thought was chilling. Was she going crazy, or was she the only one who saw the world as it truly was? Meanwhile, in a sleek, minimalist penthouse apartment high above the city, Kai slammed his fist on a mahogany desk. The expensive wood groaned under the force, but didn't crack. He was furious. His control had slipped. The moment he had laid eyes on her, the primal possessiveness of his wolf had flared, overriding centuries of careful discipline. He had whispered "mine," a declaration that should have been kept hidden. "You're losing your control, Alpha," a smooth voice said from the shadows. A man stepped out, dressed in a crisp suit. He was Kai's beta, Tunde. His eyes held a worried curiosity. "The scent was overwhelming. I've never felt anything like it. Who is she?" Kai turned away from the window, his jaw tight. "She's human, Tunde. And she's my mate." Tunde's eyes widened, a rare look of shock on his face. "A human mate? Impossible. The last time an Alpha mated with a human—" "I know," Kai cut him off, his voice low and dangerous. "That's why no one can know. Not yet." A tremor ran through the city, a faint hum that Kai's sensitive ears immediately picked up on. It was a dark, familiar energy. The men who had run past him that morning had been fleeing from a creature. A shadow beast. They were servants of the very entity he was sworn to fight. "They're getting bolder," Tunde said, sensing the change in Kai's mood. Kai walked to the wall of windows, his gaze sweeping over the city below. He knew now why the mate bond had suddenly flared so powerfully. The darkness was closing in, and his mate was a beacon of light, a target they would inevitably seek to extinguish. "They're looking for her," Kai said, more to himself than to Tunde. "She's in danger, and she doesn't even know it." He had to find her, to protect her. He had already broken one rule, revealing himself. Now, he would break every other to keep her safe. No matter what.
