The next day, Tunde came to the house with a grave expression. "Alpha, we have a problem. A large group of Shadow Kin has been spotted at the city limits. They're making their way here. They're drawn to her."
Kai's face hardened, his eyes turning to the color of molten gold. "They won't get past the wards," he stated, his voice a low, dangerous rumble.
"The wards are weakened," Tunde said, his voice hesitant. "Some of the younger pack members have been disobeying orders, leaving the compound at night, and they've been followed. They've been a distraction, pulling our power thin. Our patrols are stretched thin."
Kai’s jaw tightened. "Gather the pack. We will meet them on the outskirts of the territory."
"Kai, no!" Amara cried, grabbing his arm. "You're still weak. You can't take them on alone. And the pack is not at full strength."
"I have no choice," he said, his eyes filled with a grim determination. "I will not let them get to you."
"Then let me come with you," she said, her voice firm. "Tunde said my bond with you can amplify your power. I can help."
Kai looked at her, his face etched with conflict. His wolf, his instincts, screamed to keep her safe, to lock her away. But her words, her courage, resonated with the part of him that was a man, a leader.
He finally nodded, a silent admission of her strength. "But you stay behind me. At all times. Do you understand?"
"I do," she said, her hand reaching for his. She had never felt a fear like this. But she also had never felt this sense of purpose, of being a part of something so much bigger than herself. Her life as a normal woman was gone, replaced by the terrifying, exhilarating reality of being a part of this pack, of being his mate.
