The garden seemed to shrink as Adrian approached, each measured tap of his cane hitting the stone path like a heartbeat counting down to something inevitable. Daniel shifted subtly, placing himself half a step in front of me.
Adrian stopped a few paces away. His sightless eyes, pale and unreadable, were trained in our direction.
“Ever,” he said softly, and the way he said my name felt like both a caress and a threat.

“Speaking to the man I told you to stay away from.”
Daniel’s voice was steady. “She has a right to speak to whomever she chooses.”
Adrian’s head tilted, the faintest smile touching his lips. “And you have a habit of standing where you don’t belong.”

“Ever,” Adrian said again, his voice lower now. “Come here.”
I didn’t move.
He took a single step forward. The distance between us felt charged, dangerous. “You know I don’t like repeating myself.”
My feet moved before my mind caught up, pulling me from behind Daniel. Adrian’s hand found my arm with unnerving precision. His grip wasn’t tight, but it radiated possession.

I glanced back at Daniel. His expression was unreadable, but his eyes carried a warning not for Adrian, but for me.
We walked in silence until we reached the shadow of the veranda. Then "Adrian stopped.
“I should kill him,” he said in a voice so calm it froze me. “It would be easy. But I won’t. Not yet.”
My pulse thundered in my ears. “Why?”
His fingers brushed my wrist, a touch almost tender. “Because I want you to understand that everyone around you exists only because I allow it. And because… you’re not ready to see me as I really am.”
He released me, stepping back. “Go inside, Ever. And lock the door.”
