Mrs. Lu flew into a towering fit of rage and fainted on the spot at Lu Shiyan’s unyielding stance. The servants fell into frantic chaos, rushing to fetch a doctor and water. The entire living room descended into pandemonium.
Despite his deep anxiety for his grandmother’s health, Lu Shiyan held Su Wan’s hand tightly without the slightest slack. His resolve never wavered—he would never abandon the woman he loved, no matter how fiercely his grandmother opposed their relationship.
After the doctor arrived and ran a full examination, he explained that Mrs. Lu had merely suffered a spike in blood pressure from extreme emotional distress, and was otherwise unharmed, only needing proper rest. Once he arranged for servants to tend to his grandmother, Lu Shiyan left the Lu family manor with Su Wan.
In the car, Su Wan leaned against his shoulder, her voice heavy with guilt.“Mr. Lu, I’m so sorry. All of this is my fault. You fell out with your grandmother because of me, and you even made her faint.”
Lu Shiyan stroked her hair gently, his tone soft yet resolute.“Don’t be silly. None of this is your fault. It is simply my grandmother who is too stubborn to accept you. No matter what happens, I will never leave you, and I will never let you suffer any injustice. You have my word.”
He paused and added, “I have already tightened security at the hospital, and instructed the attending physician personally to ensure your father receives the utmost care. No one will get the chance to interfere, not even my grandmother. I will handle things with her. You no longer need to worry about your father’s safety.”
Su Wan nodded, warmth flooding her heart. With Lu Shiyan beside her, most of her unease and guilt melted away. She knew that no matter what obstacles lay ahead, as long as they stood side by side, she had nothing to fear.
What neither of them anticipated was that Mrs. Lu had no intention of backing down. Enraged beyond measure by Lu Shiyan’s defiance, her resentment only festered. Open opposition and threats had failed, so she resolved to strike from the shadows and sever Su Wan’s greatest weakness: her father’s medical treatment.
That very night, Mrs. Lu secretly contacted the vice president of Nancheng Hospital, offering him a large sum of money to deliberately sabotage Su’s father’s treatment. Her plan was to either delay necessary medication or substitute it with cheap, inferior drugs, forcing Su Wan to yield and leave Lu Shiyan of her own accord.
Greed-driven, the vice president readily agreed.
The next morning, as usual, Su Wan bought nourishing supplements and went to the hospital to visit her father. Upon entering the ward, she was horrified to find him deathly pale, struggling for breath, wracked with obvious agony, barely able to speak.
“Dad! What’s wrong with you?!”Su Wan paled instantly. She rushed to the bedside and clutched his hand, her voice trembling. “Doctor! Somebody! Please come quickly!”
The attending physician hurried over and examined the patient, his expression turning grave. Su Wan begged anxiously, “Doctor, what happened to my father? He was fine yesterday. Why is he like this all of a sudden?”
The physician hesitated, speaking evasively.“Miss Su, there are abnormal changes in Mr. Su’s condition. It appears to be an adverse reaction caused by improper medication. We need to conduct further tests to determine the exact cause.”
“Improper medication?” Su Wan was stunned. “That’s impossible. My father has been following the doctor’s orders strictly. There must be a mistake!”
At that moment, a nearby nurse let a slip of the tongue.“Miss Su… yesterday afternoon, the vice president personally came and ordered us to switch Mr. Su’s medicine. He said it was on the old matriarch’s orders…”
Before she could finish, the attending physician snapped sharply, “Enough! Get out at once!”
But Su Wan had already heard enough. It was all Mrs. Lu’s doing. She had acted underhandedly, deliberately changing her father’s medication to harm him and pressure Su Wan into leaving Lu Shiyan.
Overwhelmed by fury and crippling worry, tears streamed down Su Wan’s face. She clenched her fists so hard that her nails dug deep into her palms, her whole body shaking uncontrollably. She could not believe how cruel the old woman was—to harm a gravely ill elderly man all for the sake of driving her away.
Her hands shaking, she dialed Lu Shiyan’s number, her voice broken with sobs and rage.“Mr. Lu, please come to the hospital at once. Something has happened to my father. It’s your grandmother—she secretly changed his medicine!”
Lu Shiyan had been in the middle of a crucial board meeting. At her words, his face turned ice-cold, and a frigid aura radiated from him, freezing the entire conference room into silence. He stood abruptly, his voice icy to everyone present.“The meeting is adjourned. We will resume later.”
He hung up, grabbed his coat, and stormed out. Urging his assistant Chen Mo to prepare the car, he immediately called the hospital director, his tone sharp with unbridled wrath.“Get to the inpatient ward of Nancheng Hospital immediately. Investigate every single medication administered to Mr. Su. And bring the vice president to me at once. I want to know who gave him the audacity to alter a patient’s treatment without authorization.”
Thirty minutes later, Lu Shiyan arrived at the hospital in haste. Entering the ward, he saw Su Wan sitting beside the bed, tears streaming down her face as she clung tightly to her father’s hand, utterly drained and desolate.
“Su Wan.”He strode over and pulled her gently into his arms, his voice soft yet tinged with remorse.“I’m sorry I’m late. You have suffered, and so has your uncle.”
Su Wan buried herself in his chest, weeping bitterly.“Mr. Lu, please save my father. I beg you. This is all my fault. This happened to him because of me…”
“I won’t let anything happen to him. I promise.” Lu Shiyan patted her back soothingly, his resolve unshakable. “I have already launched an investigation and notified the hospital director. Justice will be served. Everyone responsible for harming him will pay.”
Just then, the hospital director rushed in alongside the vice president and attending physician, all of them deathly pale and hanging their heads, too afraid to meet Lu Shiyan’s gaze.
Lu Shiyan released Su Wan and turned around. His eyes bore into the vice president, blazing with suppressed fury.“You changed his medication without permission. Who ordered you?”
The vice president trembled violently, his legs buckling beneath him as he stammered desperately.“Mr. Lu… it was the old matriarch. She paid me to sabotage Mr. Su’s treatment and force Miss Su to leave you. I let greed cloud my judgment. Please spare me. I will never dare do it again!”
Lu Shiyan’s expression darkened further, the coldness around him enough to chill anyone to the bone. He had suspected his grandmother all along, yet he had never imagined she would sink so low as to endanger a dying man.
“Spare you?” He let out a cold laugh. “You tampered with a patient’s medicine, nearly costing him his life. Why would I show mercy? Chen Mo, contact legal counsel immediately and press charges. Additionally, issue a notice to every medical facility in Nancheng—he is to be blacklisted permanently. He will never work in this industry again.”
“Yes, Mr. Lu.” Chen Mo responded promptly.
The vice president collapsed to the floor, begging frantically for mercy, yet met with not an ounce of compassion. Ignoring him entirely, Lu Shiyan turned to the director.“Assemble your top medical team at once. Use only the finest medications and spare no expense in treating Mr. Su. All costs will be covered by me. If any harm befalls him, you alone will be held accountable.”
“Understood, Mr. Lu! Right away!” The director nodded frantically and hurried off with his doctors to arrange urgent treatment.
Silence returned to the ward. Lu Shiyan walked to the bedside, gazing at Su’s father’s ashen face with profound guilt. He returned to Su Wan, taking her hand gently.“Su Wan, I am so sorry. This is my fault. I failed to protect you and your father. From now on, no one will ever hurt either of you again.”
Su Wan lifted her tear-reddened eyes to look at him, her heart overflowing with gratitude. None of this was his fault, she knew. It was merely the stubborn, unforgiving cruelty of Mrs. Lu. She shook her head softly.“I don’t blame you, Mr. Lu. Thank you. For staying by my side, for everything you have done for me.”
Lu Shiyan pulled her close into a tight embrace, his voice tender and steadfast.“Silly girl, there is no need to thank me. Protecting you and your father is my duty. No matter how much my grandmother opposes us, no matter what hardships come our way, I will always be with you. We will face everything together. Alright?”
Su nodded vigorously, still clinging to him. Fresh tears fell, yet this time they were tears of relief and profound security. She knew that with Lu Shiyan beside her, she could brave every storm life threw at her.
Meanwhile, back at the Lu family manor, Mrs. Lu flew into a towering rage upon learning her scheme had collapsed and the vice president had fallen into ruin. She stared out the window, her eyes burning with resentment and defiance.
She was far from finished. She would get rid of Su Wan, no matter what. She would drive that woman away from Lu Shiyan once and for all.
