CHAPTER 2 The rink was empty. Just the hum of the lights and the faint echo of our footsteps. Cole dropped his gear bag by the bench and tossed me his jacket. “Put it on. It’s freezing in here.” I slipped it over my shoulders. It smelled like him—sweat, soap, ice. My chest tightened. He skated out onto the ice, just in sweats and a hoodie, moving smooth and fast.
