Chapter 16 After the Judgment

927 Words
Seven days had elapsed since the events in the Great Hall, where Seraphine had named every person complicit in the betrayal. All the Mystic Mages had been dealt with; their cries echoed through the keep and up into the mountains. King Draco, resolute and unyielding, visited Seraphine. She regarded him with weary resignation and asked, "Have you come to kill me, my lord? My King?" Draco studied her carefully, a cold smile playing on his lips. "So you wished to be in my bed, did you?" he said. "You tried to drug me. You helped to kill my family. What punishment is fitting for such deeds? Should I simply kill you now? Execute you and be done with it?" Seraphine didn’t scream not this time where once there had been arrogance, seduction, ambition—there was now only a hollow, trembling shell of what she had been. Her eyes searched Draco’s face, perhaps for mercy… perhaps for the man she thought she could control She found neither Only judgment cold. Final. Absolute. “My King…” she whispered, her voice barely there. Draco’s expression did not change “You made your choices,” he said evenly. “Now you will live with them Consequences.” No anger now, no raised voice that made it worse. The shadow commander stepped forward without hesitation, seizing Seraphine by the arm. This time, she did cry out—not in defiance, but in raw, animal fear “Please—Draco—please—!” He didn’t react to his name on her lips but didn’t turn didn’t acknowledge her at all, to him… she was already nothing. The chamber doors opened, swallowing her screams as she was dragged away to the life he had decreed—a fate far crueler than death for someone who had once craved power but now Silence followed. Draco stood alone for a long moment the air felt… different now Cleaner but not lighter Nothing about this was light when he finally turned, his steps did not take him back to his war room… nor to his throne. They carried him somewhere else entirely Selene’s chambers. Draco hadn't realised where he was heading until had arrived at Seline's chambers, he didn’t announce himself, he didn’t send word he simply opened the door and stepped inside as though he belonged there. She was sat by the window, the faint light casting silver across her hair, her posture calm but not unaware. She had felt him coming long before he arrived “You’ve dealt with her,” Selene said softly, without turning. It wasn’t a question Draco stopped a few steps beside her “Yes.” A pause then— “I did not kill her.” that, perhaps, was an answer to something unspoken Selene turned slowly to face him her eyes studied him—not with fear, not with submission… but with something far more dangerous Understanding “You chose something worse,” she said Draco held her gaze. On simple answer “Yes.” The Silence that stretched between them was not uncomfortable but heavy with everything that had happened… everything that had been revealed “You should hate me,” Draco said suddenly It wasn’t defensive It wasn’t bitter It was… factual. “For what was done to you. Under my rule. In my name.” Selene stepped closer not far but enough “I don’t hate you,” she said. Celine reached up on Cupped Draco’s face he felt himself lean into her hand and on the warmth, she generated Draco’s jaw tightened slightly. “You should.” Selene shook her head “I saw what they did to you,” she replied quietly. Her voice softened but didn’t weaken “You were shaped into something you didn’t choose to be.” Draco looked away for the first time Something in his eyes something forgotten a memory feeling and then it was gone as quickly as it been there. “But what you do now?” Selene continued. “That is your choice now.” His gaze returned to hers Sharp, Searching. “And what do you see when you look at me my Queen?” he asked. Selene didn’t answer immediately She stepped closer again—close enough now that the space between them felt intentional the heat on the power that surged between the pair was unmistakable. “I see a King,” she said, “who doesn’t know what he wants to be yet.” a dangerous answer But a truthful one for a moment, Draco said nothing then, quieter than she had ever heard him: “I know one thing.” Selene raised an eyebrow slightly “And that is?” Draco’s gaze held hers—steady, unwavering “No one will ever lay a hand on you again.” There was no hesitation no doubt Just certainty. Selene studied him for a long moment then, slowly, she nodded “Good,” she said softly a pause “Because next time…” there was the faintest hint of something sharper in her eyes now “I won’t need you to stop them.” And for the first time not as a ruler, not as a weapon Draco almost smiled. to him as he left a smile just a faint one curved her lips and before the door closed, she said “Draco I see you not the King. I see you!” Draco didn’t turn he walked out the door and shut it behind him his mind racing.
