Her steps quickened. She reached a cell at the far end and froze. There were five of them, huddled together in the corner. Dirt-streaked faces. Hollow eyes. One of the older ones held the others close, trying to be strong despite the fear trembling through their entire body. The youngest couldn’t have been more than four. Selene’s voice softened in a way few had ever heard. “Hey… it’s alright.” They didn’t move. Didn’t trust. Of course they didn’t.
