Wang Miao had never had hemorrhoids before. Although she sympathized with Gu Lin, she mostly wanted to laugh. When she was about to go to the hospital to see him, her mother was making dinner and asked where she was going.
Wang Miao was honest: "Going to the hospital to see Gu Lin. He has hemorrhoids and needs surgery."
Nü Mama made an "Oh" sound, "Wait, I've made some porridge here, take some for him to eat. And this spinach soup is good too, take some for him. He can eat it with steamed buns, it's good for the stomach."
Wang Miao listened to her mother rambling on about precautions for hemorrhoids, patiently waiting as she packed things. "Mom, how do you know so much about this? Have you had it before?"
Nü Mama wiped the lunchbox with a cloth, "Hurry up and go, why so many questions?"
Wang Miao stuck out her tongue, took the lunchbox and hurriedly left. She still had to go to Gu Lin's place to get clean bedsheets and clothes, oh, and feed those two silly dogs. Who knows how long it had been since Gu Lin fed them, would they have starved to death?
Fortunately, her worries didn't come true. As soon as she opened Gu Lin's door, Gu Sansan came nuzzling up to her.
This little one was growing fast, and compared to its short legs, its body was already too plump. Its belly jiggled when it ran.
Wang Miao changed into slippers, kicked Gu Sansan with her bare foot to stop it from nuzzling her, and busied herself packing things for Gu Lin.
Gu Sansan followed her around like a little tail. Every time she looked at it, it would bark happily. Gu Er, on the other hand, lay in its bed without moving.
Wang Miao finished packing, went to check if there was any food left in the dog bowls near the dog bed, and asked Gu Er, "Silly dog, have you eaten enough these past few days?"
Gu Er wagged its tail listlessly, still ignoring her.
Wang Miao emptied the yellow bowl, replaced it with fresh water, saw there was still plenty of dog food left so she didn't add more, and found a chicken strip which she split in half for the two dogs.
Gu Sansan ate very quickly, then went to steal Gu Er's food. Such a big dog as Gu Er was actually pushed aside and gave up its food.
Wang Miao finally understood how Gu Sansan had grown so plump.
She didn't have the mind to study the deep bond between the two dogs, so she took her bags and went to the hospital to find Gu Lin.
After not seeing him for a few days, Gu Lin looked much more haggard, whether from being busy with work or from having surgery.
Probably both.
But his eyes were bright when he looked at her.
Wang Miao wanted to talk to him, but seeing his lack of energy, she gave up and let him sleep for a while.
But when Gu Lin moved, his leg cramped. Wang Miao got up to help massage him, from his ankle up his calf. As she massaged, she felt his muscles were very firm. His leg strength must be quite good?
But cramping so easily in the calf wasn't good. If they got married and he kept getting cramps, how would they sleep?
She'd have to check later, did he need more calcium? Oh, Gu Lin was a doctor, he should know best.
Wang Miao felt a bit worried. Why didn't Gu Lin take better care of his body?
Thinking about his current condition, her gaze moved up to Gu Lin's bottom. He was wearing thin hospital pants. Although the pants were loose, with his bottom sticking up like that, the curves were obvious, making her... have an urge to do a "Thousand Years of Death" to him.
As Wang Miao thought this, her hand was already moving towards Gu Lin's thigh, but Gu Lin seemed to sense her ill intentions and moved his bottom away.
Wang Miao came back to her senses and quickly moved her hand back to his calf, amused by herself, imagining the scene of Gu Lin screaming in pain and feeling it was too cruel.
Gu Lin coughed and said in a muffled voice, "It's fine now, doesn't hurt anymore. Stop massaging, it'll tire your hands."
Wang Miao shook her hands, they were a bit tired.
She sat back down by Gu Lin's bed, resting her chin on her hand as she watched him sleep. He must be really tired to fall asleep so quickly.
Wang Miao didn't expect she could watch Gu Lin sleep for over half an hour, until her neck started to ache and she changed position to play with her phone. Gu Lin slept so quietly, without snoring, grinding his teeth, or farting.
Pff, no good, Wang Miao couldn't help but laugh when she thought about farts.
Is it very painful for him to fart now?
It was very late, and Nü Mama called her. She got up and went to the corridor to answer, "Gu Lin's condition is quite serious, he needs to stay in the hospital. I won't come back tonight."
"Come back, come back. There's no place to sleep there, it's so uncomfortable."
Wang Miao didn't lack sleep. She felt her mother was overthinking, worrying that Gu Lin might take advantage of her at a time like this. Even if he wanted to, he didn't have the energy, right?
"Mom, we're about to get married. It's not appropriate for me to ignore him when he's sick in the hospital, right? Mom, don't worry. I'll just sit here for the night, see how he's doing, and come back tomorrow." Wang Miao hung up quickly, afraid her mother might still disagree.
Fortunately, Nü Mama didn't call back repeatedly to make her come home.
When she went back into the ward, she found Gu Lin had woken up, groggy and rubbing his eyes.
Gu Lin saw her too, checked the time on his phone, "I thought you had gone home."
"No, I'm not going back tonight. I'll stay here with you." Wang Miao hadn't eaten all night but didn't feel hungry. She just opened a bottle of mineral water and took a couple of sips, then asked Gu Lin, "Do you want some?"
Gu Lin nodded, then shook his head, then finally nodded hesitantly, "Just a small sip, to moisten my throat."
Wang Miao was about to open another bottle when Gu Lin said softly, "Don't waste it. I won't drink much. The one you opened is fine."
"You're a doctor, how can you be so unhygienic!" Wang Miao laughed secretly, teasing him.
Gu Lin winked at her, "I don't mind your germs."
"But I mind yours. How can I drink after you?" As Wang Miao said this, she took another sip of water, bent down close to Gu Lin's face, puffed out her cheeks and moved towards his lips, intending to pass the water to his mouth.
Gu Lin's half-closed eyes gradually opened wide. He leaned towards her actively, but as soon as he moved, he pulled his wound and his brows furrowed. Even in such pain, he still kept stretching his neck.
Wang Miao couldn't hold back her laughter and sprayed water all over his face with a "pffft".
"..."
After spraying him, Wang Miao felt guilty and pulled out some tissues to help wipe his face, apologizing insincerely, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to."
Gu Lin had already pulled his neck back and looked at the patient in the opposite bed.
He was in a four-person ward with a relatively good environment. Wang Miao followed his gaze to the opposite bed and saw that the auntie was already asleep.
Wang Miao unconsciously lowered her voice, "Do you still want to drink?"
Gu Lin turned his head to the other side, looking at the wall, "No."
He seemed to be in a bit of a mood.
Wang Miao swore she really didn't mean to laugh and spray water. It was just that Gu Lin's eager and serious expression was too funny. His unhappy look now was funny too.
Wang Miao decided to coax him. She pressed his nose and bumped it, "I must have something wrong with my brain. I actually think you still look good even with hemorrhoids."
Gu Lin was still looking at the wall, but his voice softened a bit, "What does that have to do with anything? My hemorrhoids aren't on my face."
Wang Miao found him too adorable. She pulled the curtain in front of the bed, creating a relatively enclosed space. She wanted to kiss him but was afraid he might think she was too frivolous. After all, this was a hospital, and his workplace.
She stood still quietly. Gu Lin finally turned his head back, "Why did you pull the curtain?"
"Afraid of disturbing your sleep. You should sleep."
Gu Lin turned back into the steady man she was familiar with, speaking to her gently, "You should go back. The air here is bad, and there are a lot of germs. You can stay at my place for the night and come back tomorrow if you're free."
"No, I want to stay and keep you company." Wang Miao insisted stubbornly. She genuinely wanted to keep him company, and also wanted to make him feel her goodness more, just like when she massaged his leg earlier. If one day he found out she had lied to him, he might remember these warm moments and not be so angry.
Hearing this, Gu Lin didn't try to persuade her anymore, "You can't just sit all night like this. Be careful not to end up like me."
"Then I... should I lie on the bed too?" Wang Miao looked at the size of the hospital bed, considering the feasibility.
But Gu Lin simply patted the space beside him, "Come over and see if you can fit."
With the curtain drawn like this, shame was blocked out along with it. Wang Miao's face showed some hesitation, but her actions were decisive. She pushed Gu Lin towards the edge of the bed to make more room, then went around to the head of the bed, took off her shoes, and climbed onto the bed.
He was lying on his stomach, so she couldn't lie flat. She could only lie on her side, pressed against him.
His body was warm, his movements slow due to the wound. He lifted the blanket to cover her waist.
Wang Miao found it too exciting and asked him quietly if they would be scolded if a nurse came to change the dressing and saw them.
"Probably," Gu Lin nodded, "My colleagues would probably laugh at me too."
"Should I just sit up all night then?" Wang Miao asked this but didn't move an inch, lying there steadily.
Gu Lin patted her lower back, "Get some sleep. Wake up early and jump off the bed quickly like an agile red bird."
Wang Miao looked at her dress, which was white with blue flowers. Where did the red bird come from?
Gu Lin seemed to understand what she was thinking and added, "The one that smashes green pigs."
Smash green pigs? Uh, Angry Birds?
Wang Miao really wanted to beat up this man who currently had no ability to defend himself, but for the sake of her gentle image, she held back.
But Gu Lin annoyed her further by asking, "Are you on your period? You can't get blood on me, people might think it's my blood."
"I'm not..." Wang Miao controlled the urge to roll her eyes.
Gu Lin took her hand and kissed it, "Patients are like children, so you have to forgive me. Good night."
Can forgiveness be forced like this?
Wang Miao didn't think much about this slightly different Gu Lin. Perhaps people in love like to act cute, regardless of gender.
In such a narrow space, it got a bit hot after sleeping for a while. The lights in the ward were already off, and the whole room was quiet.
Wang Miao woke up suddenly and found Gu Lin was moving slightly.
She asked in a low voice, "What's wrong? What are you doing?"
Gu Lin was startled by her voice, "Why are you awake?"
"Why aren't you sleeping properly?"
"I... need to go to the bathroom."
Wang Miao remembered he said he couldn't have a bowel movement for 24 hours? She asked uncertainly, "To pee?"
"...Mm."
"Should I help you to the bathroom?"
"No need... there's a bedpan."
Wang Miao took a moment to react, realizing he meant a urinal. She hesitated for a moment, not out of shyness, but... because it was dirty.
"I was going to get it myself, but it's too uncomfortable. Can you call the night shift nurse for me?"
Nurse? Female nurse?
That won't do, a female nurse won't do.
"Ask the nurse to bring me a new bedpan. The hospital sells them."
"Oh, oh." Wang Miao realized she had overthought. Gu Lin wasn't missing his hands or feet, of course he could pee by himself.
She fussed for a while, got the bedpan, even rinsed it with water before giving it to Gu Lin, "You can pee now."
"I can't pee with you watching like that."
Wang Miao turned around to play with her nails. The "whoosh whoosh" sound behind her was particularly clear in the quiet ward. When the sound ended, Wang Miao turned back, intending to empty it for him, but saw Gu Lin struggling to pull up his pants. It seemed difficult with one hand, and the process wasn't as smooth as taking them off.
Afraid he might feel embarrassed, Wang Miao quietly turned her head away again.
Until Gu Lin called her softly, "Sorry to trouble you, can you help me empty it?"
Perhaps doctors are used to these things. Wang Miao found that Gu Lin still maintained his steady demeanor, and she admired him even more.
Though she wasn't sure what exactly she was admiring.
Walking towards the toilet with the warm bedpan, Wang Miao wished she could pinch the handle with her fingertips. She emptied it as quickly as possible, rinsed it with water, and brought it back to the ward with a disgusted look, placing it under the bed.
This trip had woken her up completely, all sleepiness gone. But she still wanted to cuddle with Gu Lin, so she made do and got back on the bed to sleep until dawn.
In the morning, she bought some vegetable porridge for Gu Lin to eat. Seeing him eat and then continue sleeping, she thought it was good that he got sick like this, at least he had time to rest.
Her initial amusement had faded, and now seeing Gu Lin fall asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow, Wang Miao started to feel sorry for him and his heavy work pressure.
She knew Gu Lin couldn't sleep comfortably with her beside him, and the nurses were checking quite frequently. She wasn't too worried about his condition and just wanted him to sleep well.
She sent him a message saying she'd come back to see him in the afternoon, then Wang Miao went home.
She showered, slept, changed clothes, and put on exquisite makeup, wanting to appear beautiful in front of her boyfriend to cheer him up.
She did look beautiful, but when she arrived at the ward, her boyfriend was gone.
She called Gu Lin in confusion, but no one answered.
She asked a nurse at the door, and the young nurse enthusiastically told her that Dr. Gu had gone to work.
Isn't this reckless? Not even 24 hours had passed, what work was he doing?
Just as she was feeling annoyed and thinking of leaving without caring about Gu Lin anymore, he limped back slowly, supporting himself against the wall.
Feelings of distress and annoyance alternated, and Wang Miao didn't know what expression to make. Before she could figure it out, her feet had already moved towards Gu Lin, her hand supporting his arm as she helped him back to the ward.
She thought she should say something imposing to let Gu Lin know her anger, but Gu Lin spoke first, "I really behaved terribly!"
This self-aware attitude made the words at the tip of Wang Miao's tongue turn into, "It's good that you know."
