CHAPTER6

Riley stood at the edge of the pack grounds as dawn broke, pale light filtering through mist and pine. She looked nothing like the frightened girl who’d driven into Silver Ridge, uncertain and running. Now she stood strong—Luna risen, legacy claimed, ready to lead alongside Alec. Behind her, the pack assembled in a loose semi-circle: wolves and humans alike, silent in the hush before the storm. Alec stood beside her, his hand warm on her back, his stance protective yet proud. They exchanged a small, unspoken nod. Together, they would face this. A low rumble rolled through the forest—footsteps, chanting, the echo of old power. Lucian stepped into the clearing, tall, lithe, and wild-eyed. His dark hair tumbled over his shoulders, eyes smoldering with fire. Behind him came his followers—rogues, beasts bound by dark magic, their lip curled, claws digging into the earth. Lucian’s gaze flicked to Riley. “So. The Moonborn stands at dawn. Did you choose destiny, or did destiny claim you?” Riley’s pulse thundered. She closed the narrow space between their stares. “I chose.” He laughed, a harsh, mocking sound. “Then prove it.” The rogues attacked. Alec shifted mid-stride, muscles coiling. Riley joined him, shifting too—fur rippling, senses sharpening. Together they met the wave of enemies. The battle was brutal. Gwen, one of the pack warriors, deflected a rogue’s swipe with a bark-throwing knife. Logan, another, tackled two rogues at once, teeth bared, claw-slashed fur. Chaos reigned beneath the red dawn sky. Riley moved like lightning—her silver wolf form long-limbed and fierce. Power thundered through her—alpha’s fire, Luna’s instinct. She joined Alec in a kill zone of fur and rage, their movements synchronized: claw, leap, roll, strike. Alec took down Lucian’s lieutenants; Riley took down the rogues. Then Lucian and Riley came face to face. He snarled. She snarled back. Their forms blurred in superheated fury. Lucian was ruthless—fast, precise, deadly—but his arrogance was his downfall. He underestimated Riley. He didn’t know she’d been trained—not just in claws or instincts but in courage, empathy, bond. They crashed to the ground. He held her wrists. She looked up at him, eyes glowing gold like moonlit glass. “You’re just like her,” he hissed. “Her blood, her fire.” “And I’m nothing like you,” Riley spat. “You killed, betrayed, burned. She saved, protected, loved.” He hesitated. That was all it took. Riley’s wolf form surged. She twisted out of his grip, body a whirlwind of strength and purpose. She bit his arm—not to kill, but to mark him. A sharp, precise bite that drew blood but didn’t kill. It seared white-hot magic. Together, she and Alec howled—deep, wild, united. The pack answered from the woods—wolves howling, humans echoing. A wave of power rippled across the clearing. Lucian froze. “You are Luna,” he whispered, retreating. “This isn’t over.” He slipped into the trees. The rogues scattered behind him, running with fear in their hearts. Silence fell. ⸻ Riley collapsed to her knees, human again, body trembling. Alec sank beside her, cradling her face—blood still on his hands, heart fierce in his chest. “You did it,” he whispered. “You led them.” She closed her eyes, tears mingling with sweat. “I didn’t think I could.” “Because you cared,” Alec said. “You protected them. That’s what Lunas do.” They rose as one. The pack surged forward, wolves and humans alike surrounding them. Eira—the seer—stepped into the circle and placed her hands on Riley’s shoulders. “You have claimed your birthright,” she said, voice strong as thunder. “You are the Moonborn. The protector. The Alpha’s mate. The balance between light and dark.” Riley met Alec’s gaze. He slid a silver pendant along its chain—the one she’d seen in her mother’s dream. Her mother’s pendant. “I belong to you,” he said, voice low. Riley smiled through her tears. “And I to you.” They stepped forward together, hand in hand. ⸻ Weeks later, the scars of battle were healing. The forest was silent again—this time in peace. Wolves ran through the trees, cubs tumbled underfoot, and laughter drifted through the clearing where once there had been only war. Riley strolled through the pack grounds, now rebuilt under Alec’s leadership. She wore a tunic of gray and silver, her hair braided with pine boughs. She paused to watch two wolf pups tumble in the grass—one sable, one silver. One look and she saw hope: new life in a new era. A voice stopped her. “May I join you?” Alec stood behind her, warmth brushing her shoulder. Riley turned. He held the pendant in his hand. Their pendant—her mother’s, reclaimed. He tied it around her neck. The moonstone glowed faintly against her chest. “Together,” he whispered. She reached for his hand and squeezed. “Together,” she agreed. ⸻ Under a rising full moon, Riley and Alec—bonded mates, Luna and Alpha—stood at the front of their pack. Wolves howled. Human pack members cheered. Stars shimmered overhead. Dreams had been fulfilled. Legacies had been remembered. Love had been chosen. Her mother’s blood pulsed in her veins. His strength pulsed in her spine. Their bond pulsed through the land. And beneath the moon and fire, they began their reign—together at last.
