Rawls argued that if people could not know who they were, and how they might gain or lose as a result of a decision, then they would be motivated to make a decision that was the optimal one for everyone who could or might stand to benefit or lose as a result of that decision. Makras first extended the definition to include all sentient beings. And so while making decisions that affected all sentient beings, such as farm animals, the decision makers would never be able to know if they were in fact humans or chickens.
