46 The Company Pearland Police Department Whelan walked into the captain’s office. The captain stood behind his desk and motioned for Whelan to close the door behind him. He pointed to the two suits. “Whelan, you know Special Agent Wilmont, Bureau.” Wilmont stood, nodded to Whelan, and shook his hand. The captain continued. “And this is Lawrence Wallace. He’s with . . . another agency.” The man’s face was pockmarked, as if it had been scarred by being dragged across gravel. Whelan leaned toward the man with his hand extended, but Wallace remained seated, one leg crossed over the other. He did not acknowledge Whelan. Instead, he glanced at his crisp suit trousers and swept a hand across a piece of lint. “Yeah, nice to make your acquaintance too,” Whelan said as he rolled his eyes.
