Chapter 28

Liam’s POV The look on Aurora’s face was pure gold — wide eyes, frozen smile, that flash of panic she couldn’t quite hide. Exactly the reaction I wanted. Seeing her squirm made every calculated move worth it. Damon’s mother stepped forward with a warm smile. “Oh, you are so beautiful, dear,” she said, cupping Aurora’s cheeks gently. I rolled my eyes behind her back. Spare me. Damon’s voice came out tight. “Mom, why is Liam here?” I flashed my most charming grin. “Your mom insisted I tag along. She loves me like that, you know? Couldn’t say no to her.” Annoyance flashed across Damon’s face, but he quickly masked it. His mother beamed, turning to him. “You know how much I love the Alpha . We ran into each other at the mall recently, and I just had to bring him along to meet you all.” Ran into each other. Right. I’d planned that meeting the second I heard she was coming back to the city. What mother wouldn’t visit her son first? A few well-placed compliments, some shared memories, and she was eating out of my hand. She kept glancing at Aurora, repeating, “She’s so pretty, isn’t she? Absolutely lovely.” Each compliment made Aurora blush deeper, which only amused me more. Damon cleared his throat. “Mom, why don’t you sit down?” “Oh, yes! Come, come. I want to know everything about this relationship,” she said excitedly, settling onto the couch and pulling Aurora down beside her. I leaned back against the wall, arms crossed, enjoying the show. They were clearly awkward with me here. Too bad. I couldn’t give a f**k. “So, how did you two meet?” she asked, eyes sparkling. Emette and Aurora both started talking at once, then stopped. Their stories stumbled over each other — dates not adding up, details fuzzy. It sounded strange even to me. And then the question I’d been waiting for: “And why is this other young man here? Do you all three live together?” The tension in the room thickened. Aurora shifted uncomfortably. Next came the heavier question. “Tell me about your parents, dear. I’d love to meet them someday.” Aurora’s voice went soft, emotional. “I’m… an orphan. Both my parents died. I had to figure everything out on my own.” For a split second, something twisted in my chest. I’d never really cared about her past before. Hearing it now — the raw pain in her voice — made it harder to ignore how badly I might have treated her. But I shoved the feeling down. Too late for guilt. Damon’s mother looked sympathetic. “Oh, you poor thing. Why wasn’t I invited to the engagement? I would have loved to be there!” Both of them gave different, half-baked answers that only made the whole thing look more suspicious. I smirked inwardly. Their “relationship” was cracking right in front of me. Emette stood up and brought in glasses of orange juice. When he handed me mine, his stare was ice-cold — the kind that could kill if looks had power. I gave him an awkward smile and took the glass. What’s your problem, buddy? Then came the hammer. Damon’s mom clapped her hands together. “It’s time we start planning the wedding!” My eyes widened in mock surprise. I jumped in smoothly before anyone else could speak. “Whoa, not so fast. It’s not a must to rush into marriage. I mean, they barely know each other. Don’t you think they should spend more time as fiancés than jumping straight into being a married couple?” I turned and winked at Aurora and Emette. “I’m sure you both can agree with that.” Damon’s mother paused, then nodded thoughtfully. “You know, Liam has a point. There’s no need to rush.” A smirk spread across my face. Perfect. Another crack in their little lie — and I’d just driven the wedge deeper.
