Chapter 2:The Shadow of the North

He didn't treat me like a prisoner as he led me away from the wreckage of my original path. There were no chains, no rough handling. Instead, he placed a firm, steadying hand on my elbow, guiding me toward a carriage that looked more like a traveling study than a transport. It was reinforced with iron and draped in heavy black leather, surrounded by a wall of knights in dark, matte armor. They didn't look like bandits; they looked like a professional army. Who exactly is he? I wondered, my heart hammering against my ribs. He wasn't loud or aggressive. In fact, he was remarkably quiet. He moved with a terrifying grace, the kind of man who didn't need to raise his voice to be obeyed. He was a gentleman, certainly, but one carved from the cold marble of the mountains. He stepped aside to let me ascend into the carriage first. The interior was a sanctuary of luxury. It smelled of expensive cedar wood, old parchment, and the crisp, clean scent of a winter forest. As we settled into the plush velvet seats, the carriage lurched forward, beginning our journey into the unknown. The silence between us wasn't jagged; it was just heavy. He didn't hover over me or try to intimidate me. Instead, he immediately reached for a stack of papers and a quill, his focus shifting to the work at hand as if he were simply finishing a long day at the office. I gathered every ounce of my fading courage to look up at him. "By any chance..." my voice trailed off, then I forced it to stay steady. "Do I at least get to know the name of the man who had intervened in my father's plans? Or am I to remain a stranger in my own life?" He didn't look up immediately, but the quill paused for a fraction of a second. The carriage swayed, and he waited for the movement to settle before finally meeting my eyes. His gaze wasn't mean—it was just incredibly still. "I am Duke Valdemar of the Northern Coast," he said, his voice level. "And you are no stranger to me, Elena." He didn't elaborate. Without another word, he returned to his papers. My breath hitched. Everyone knew the legends of the Northern Coast. It was a land of mist and iron, a territory more powerful than any other. They said the people of the North were as Stoic as the mountains they guarded. Why me? The question screamed in my head. I wasn't an heiress or a politician. Compared to the formidable women of his land, I was a common wildflower. For now, all I could do was observe him. He seemed less like a kidnapper and more like a man who had simply stepped in to settle a bad debt. My thoughts drifted back to the road. Bella. I hoped he had made arrangements for her safety. If he was as honorable as his reputation suggested, surely he wouldn't leave a servant girl to the mercy of the road. The hours dragged on. The luxury of the carriage became a bore, and the silence felt like a thick blanket. I couldn't help but sigh, the sound escaping before I could stop it. "When will we arrive, Master?" I regretted the word "Master" the moment it left my lips—it felt too small, too submissive. He slowly looked up, and for a moment, the coldness in his eyes seemed to flicker with something else. Not anger, but perhaps a weary sort of patience. "It is a long journey to the coast," he said. He reached for a small woolen throw at the end of the seat and nudged it toward me. "You should rest. You look as though you’re about to collapse, and I have no desire to bring a ghost into my home." His tone was final, but he wasn't being cruel—he was being practical. I leaned my head against the window, the woolen blanket surprisingly soft against my skin. Slowly, the rhythmic swaying and the exhaustion of the night began to wear me down. As I drifted into a fitful sleep, the breeze through the window pulled me backward. I was falling... back into that memory. The one I can’t escape. The dark room, the sound of the bolt, and the feeling of being discarded. But this time, in my dream, the shadow at the door didn't just walk away. It lingered, watching, as if waiting for the right moment to let me out.
