Her eyes opened, and for a minute, the terror in them gave way to something else—something that caused my heart to hurt. She said softly now, "Thorne." "Why are you still doing this? Why would you continue to gamble everything for me?
I looked back at her unflinchingly. "Because Lyra, I can not lose you. I won't do it.
Her breath stopped, and I saw the barriers she had so painstakingly constructed around her fall apart. But the precious moment was broken before she could answer by the sound of far-off footsteps.
She murmured, terror tumbling through her voice, "They're coming." We had to go right now.
I got myself moving, gritting my teeth against the agony. "Then let's not satisfy them by catching us."
Lyra supported me as we staggered toward the exit
