Chapter 24: The ring he saved for her

1240 Words
The house was as quiet as usual that evening. Tiana sat on the edge of her makeshift bed, fingers brushing the soft sheets as if memorising the texture. Her wedding band glinted softly in the evening sun, pouring through the window. It felt unreal. She was a wife. Jake's wife. And yet there was an ache deep in her chest she didn't know how to name, something between gratitude and fear, joy and the disbelief that any of this was real. She was tracing the smooth loop of the silver when she heard a quiet knock. "Tiana, " Jake's voice murmured. "It's me." "Come in, " she said softly. Jake opened the door slowly as if entering her room was something sacred he had to approach carefully. His eyes swept instinctively around the space, making sure she was okay before they settled on her. "Can I sit?" He asked. Tiana nodded. He came to sit beside her, keeping a small, respectful distance, elbows resting on his knees as he exhaled slowly. For the first time all day, he looked nervous. Tiana frowned, touching his arm gently. "What's wrong?" Jake shook his head once. "Nothing is wrong. " Then quieter. "I just didn't think I'd be this bad at this. " "At what. " "At being someone's husband. " Tiana's breath caught. She opened her mouth to reassure him, but Jake held up a hand, not stopping, just asking for a little time. Time to breathe, to prepare for what he planned even before she asked him to marry her. "There is something I want to give you," he said. "If you'll let me. " He reached into his jacket pocket, and Tiana watched as his hands shook slightly - just enough for her to notice because she had learned to read danger. She had learnt to expect it even when she knew it wasn't around. Because danger had lived with her. Within those four walls, she had called a cage. But this wasn't danger. This was something else. Something that made Jake nervous. And Tiana knew Jake would never hurt her. Not physically, at least. He pulled out a small velvet box from his pocket. Tiana froze. Jake wasn't looking at her. He was staring at the box like it was a confession he'd been holding for too long. "I was saving this, " he murmured. "Even before you asked me to marry you. " Her heart fluttered painfully. "Jake..." "I got it the day after Marco told me what happened to you. " his voice cracked, soft but sharp, full of the guilt he carried like a second skin. Guilt that ate him every time he thought of that day. The warehouse. Her bloodied bruised body. Her tears. How she begged and clung to him despite the fear. That night will forever live with him. "I walked past a jewellery store after leaving the hospital. I don't even know why I went in. It wasn't planned. I just saw something and... it reminded me of you. " He opened the box. Inside was a ring, delicate, silver, simple, but in the centre sat a tiny stone the colour of pale moonlight. It was soft, gentle, and almost shy. It wasn't a trophy nor a statement. Tiana's breath hitched, fingertips hovering over it. "Jake, " she whispered. "It's beautiful. " "It's yours, " he said quietly. "I bought it because... because I wanted you to have something that didn't come from fear or running or pain. Something that belonged just to you. Not the marriage, not the world, not the pain, and definitely not the past. " He swallowed. "Just you. " Her eyes burned, voice choked with emotions. "But we already have the wedding bands. " Jake nodded slowly. "This wasn't about the marriage. This is about you." He hesitated, then turned fully toward her. "I don't really know what happened to you before me, but from what Marco said and your reaction towards men, I know it wasn't good. I understand that they had taken things from you, decisions, safety, and freedom." His voice grew rougher, more determined. "I wanted to give you something. Only that, no expectations or pressure. Just something that's yours. " A tear slipped down her cheeks before she could stop it. Jake reached up, wiping her tear with his thumb. "If you don't want it, I'll put it away. No questions asked," he whispered. "But if you do..." He lifted the ring gently between her fingers. "...then let me give this to you the way I should have given you everything from the beginning. " Tiana's voice shook so badly she almost couldn't speak. "I want it, " she breathed. "I want everything you give to me, Jake." Something inside him softened painfully, like she'd struck the last functioning nerve in his heart. He took her hand carefully, as if he was afraid she might break from the slightest pressure. When he slipped the ring onto her finger, right beside the wedding band, Tiana felt something warm through her chest. It wasn't ownership, wasn't fear, wasn't obligation. Just the warm feeling of finally completely belonging where she was wanted, loved, and chosen. Jake watched her hand for a long moment, his thumb brushing the rings slightly. "It looks right on you, " he murmured. "It feels right, " she whispered back. Silence settled over them, full and warm. Jake leaned forward and pressed a soft, quiet, reverent kiss to her temple. "You're safe here, " he murmured against her skin. "And you are safe with me. The ring is just... a reminder. For both of us. " Her throat tightened. "A reminder of what?" Jake pulled back, just enough to look into her eyes, his own dark with honesty and emotion. "That you are not alone. Not anymore. Not ever again. " Tiana's heart swelled so painfully she had to cover her mouth with her hands for a moment. Jake watched her with that cautious tenderness, the kind he only ever showed her. She whispered, voice trembling with trust. "Jake, I love it. And I love you. " Jake inhaled sharply eyes shutting just for a second as if bracing himself for the impact of her words. When he opened them again, they were soft in the way only she ever saw. "I love you too, " he murmured. "More than I know how to say. " He touched her hand again, brushing the new ring. "Welcome home Mrs valerian, my wife. " Tiana leaned into him, and for the first time, the house didn't feel overwhelming or strange. It was warm, safe, his and hers. "Thank you, husband. " Jake held her as the room hummed around them, his nose to her hair as his arms wrapped protectively around her. Tiana pulled back after a while. Jake, " she called softly. "I want to sleep on the bed tonight. " Jake watched her carefully. "Are you sure?" Tiana nodded. Jake stood up and then helped her up. He started for the bed in the room, her bed, the one she had once abandoned for the floor. But Tiana stopped him. Jake turned to her. "Your room," she said shyly. "I want it to be our room. " Jake watched her for a while but still nodded. It was time she faced her demons, her fears, and learned to keep them in control.
