Chapter 26: The house noticed

1029 Words
The change was immediate. It wasn't announced. There was no formal gathering, no statement made to the staff, no press release or carefully crafted narrative. Yet the moment Jake and Tiana descended the stairs together the following morning, the house knew. The how noticed. Maya was the first to see it. She stood near the foot of the staircase, tablet in hand, mid instruction to the two housekeepers, when her words trailed off. Her sharp, observant eyes lifted and softened. Jake walked beside Tiana, not a step ahead, not behind. His hands rested lightly on the small of her back fingers splayed in a quiet, possessive way that wasn't meant to intimidate but reassure. Tiana leaned into the touch unconsciously, her steps sure, her chin lifted. She was proud of herself, proud of what she had managed to do last night. With him. Her anchor. The same touch that had somehow held her to sleep. That too on the bed. The one thing that had her nerves wrecked and her body screaming to bolt. May noticed. The confidence way Tiana carried herself that morning. The adoration shining in Jake's eyes as he looked at her like he was enchanted. And there it was. The ring. It wasn't flashy or meant to draw attention. But it was unmistakable. Maya's breath caught. In all the years she had known Jake, raised him, worried over him, argued with him, watched him grow into the man he was, she had never seen him look like this. Lighter, happier and protective. Not reckless, not weak. Just...unburdened. She smiled before she could stop herself. "Well, " she said warmly as Tiana and Jake reached the last step. "About time. " Tiana laughed softly cheeks warming, while Jake's mouth curved in a way that stunned everyone watching. Jake smiling and that happiness wasn't something they got to see often. "You noticed, " he said dryly. "I raised you, " Maya replied eyes shining. "I notice everything. " She stepped closer, taking Tiana's hands into hers without hesitation, squeezing gently. "Welcome to the family, " she said voice thick with emotion. "Officially. " Tiana swallowed, touched beyond words. "Thank you," she whispered. Maya had said those words earlier that day before, but the words still had the same effect on Tiana as the first time. She had never had a family before. Not one that looked at her the way Jake and Maya did. Not one that welcomed her to the family. Not one who worried and cared about her as Jake did. So those words were as much her accomplishment as managing to sleep on the bed without screaming was. As they walked towards the dining room. Whispers followed. Not gossip. Just wonder. The guards stationed near the door straightened instinctively, eyes sharp as always but their expression shifted when Jake passed. He acknowledged them with a nod. Not the curt distant acknowledgement they were used to, but a genuine one. "Morning, " he said. The words alone sent quiet shock waves through them. They hadn't, in anytime expected it. Later, near the security wing, two guards exchanged a look of disbelief. "Boss looks...different," one murmured. "Yeah, " the other agreed. "He looks different like he slept. And smiled," the other added disbelief laced through his voice. "That woman did something to him no one else could. Not even Ms Lena," the second said with a grin. "She made him human. " In the kitchen, the staff passed as Jake entered with Tiana beside him. He pulled out her chair making sure she was settled in it before sitting himself, A smaller intimate gesture that left the room stunned into silence. Some watched wide-eyed while others watched in admiration. One of the younger maids whispered."Is that... Mrs Valerian?" The head cook nodded solemnly. "That's the boss's wife. " Tiana caught fragments of the murmur and felt the curiosity in the air. She didn't blame them for the way they looked at her. She didn't feel any ill intentions from them either. They seemed to be just curious about her. That had surprised her. The only time she remembered capturing someone's interest, she knew pain would follow. But this was different. The staff didn't look at her like they wanted to hurt her. They were just curious. In a relieved way. But what struck her most was the warmth beneath it. Not fear. Not resentment. Just cautious Joy. She glanced at Jake, her husband, her rock, and she watched the way he listened to Maya discuss the day's schedule. The way he corrected nothing and rushed no one. He laughed at something Maya said and the sound echoed like a miracle washing over her. God, she loved that sound. She loved that he was this happy and light. And most of all she loved him. Loved the way that smile made his grey eyes shine. Loved that despite being in a deep conversation with Maya, his body was somehow still aware of her presence, his hands in hers. Maya noticed Tiana watching Jake as he moved away from the dining table where they had sat. "You see it too don't you?" She murmured later when Jake had stepped out to take a call. Tiana nodded. "He seems... lighter. " Maya smiled knowingly. "That's what love does to men like him. It gives them something to come home to." When Jake returned he slipped his hands back into Tiana's without thinking, thumbs brushing against her rings like it was the most natural thing to do. He seemed so tuned to it like he had done it his entire life. Everyone saw it. Every heart understood. And all of them approved that even Jake deserved the happiness Tiana seemed to have brought with her. The house served a powerful man for years, one built of control, silence, pain and shadows. Now it served something new. A man who had found his wife. A man who loved his wife. And a man who was finally accepting that with her coming, some changes had to be made. And for the first time, the estate didn't just feel protected. It felt alive.
