Chapter 25: The bed she conquered

Jake hadn't questioned her request. He just took her to his bedroom, being there for every moment she wanted him to witness. The bedroom was dim, lit by only by the soft glow of a lamp on the far side of the room. The curtains were drawn, the mansion hushed into its familiar stillness. Everything was safe and calm. And still, Tiana stood frozen just inside the doorway. The bed waited. Wide. Perfectly made. Untouched like Jake hadn't slept in it for a while. Her chest tightened as she stared at it, afraid to look anywhere, breathing shortening without permission. It didn't matter that this was Jake's room. That Jake was here. That the sheets were clean, the mattress new, the scent faintly familiar with him. Beds didn't care about logic. Beds remembered. Beds took from her. Beds knew how to make her scream and still muffled it. Her fingers curled around her ring on her hand, the one Jake had given her earlier that evening. Not the wedding band. The other one. The one he had taken from his pockets with quiet reverence, the one he'd kept since the night he found her broken, and breathing, barely alive. That ring was her proof that she survived. She survived her father, survived the hands that pinned her down only to watch her break, survived the men at the warehouse. She had survived more than she thought she ever could. One bed wouldn't make a difference. It shouldn't make a difference. Especially when it contained his scent, his safety, and his love. She will survive it too. She had to survive it. She pressed the ring into her palm, now grounding herself as the past clawed forward. Fresh. Terrifying. Haunting. Jake noticed the way she hadn't moved. He didn't rush her. Didn't tell her it was fine. Didn't insist. He simply set his jacket aside and turned towards her fully. "You don't have to, " he said gently. "Not tonight. Not ever. " The words were permission and also an invitation. One without pressure. Tiana swallowed hard. "I want to try, " she whispered. Jake's brow furrowed, concern flushing through his eyes. "Tiana-" "I know, " she said quickly, shaking her head. "I know I can sleep on the floor. I know you'd let me. But..." Her voice trembled. "I don't want to be afraid of it forever. " Silence stretched between them, thick and careful. Jake crossed the room slowly, stopping a step away from her. He didn't touch her yet. He waited. "You're in control, " he said. "Every second. If it's too much. We stop. If you change your mind, we stop. If all you do is sit on the edge, then that's enough. " Her eyes burned as she nodded. "Okay, " she breathed. They moved closer to the bed together. Each step felt heavier than the last. Her heart pounded, memories flickering at the edges of her vision. Hands that weren't gentle, voices that weren't kind, ceilings she'd stared at while dissociating just to survive. Her knees weakened. Jake noticed instantly. He reached out to offer his hands despite wanting to pull her to him, to guide her. But he knew she needed to do this on her own, and he wouldn't be the one to take that from her. Tiana took his hand. The contact steadied her, his warmth anchoring her in the present. In the now. In him. They stopped at the edge of the mattress. Tiana stared down at the sheets like they might reach up and grab her. "I hate that this scares me." she whispered shame, threading her words. Jake lifted her chin gently until she met his eyes. His gaze was fierce, not angry but protective. "There is nothing weak about surviving, " he said firmly. "And there is nothing shameful about fear that was taught to you by cruelty. " Tears slipped free. "I want this bed to be different," she said. "I want it to belong to us. " Jake's thumb brushed away her tears. "Then we'll take it back slowly. " He sat down first. Not sprawling. Not claiming the space. Just sitting. The bed didn't collapse. The room didn't change. Nothing bad happened. Tiana's breath hitched with that knowledge. "Your turn," he said softly. "Only if you want." Tiana hesitated, then sat beside him, perching on the very edge as if ready to bolt. Her muscles were rigid, her hands clenched in her on her lap. Jake didn't lie down, didn't crowd her. He simply stayed. Seconds passed then minutes. The silence was only broken by her breathing. She expected panic to explode, but it didn't. Not yet. It hovered uncertainly, but it didn't recognise the rules anymore. "I'm still here, " she murmured more to herself. Jake smiled faintly. "You are. " She shifted, just slightly letting more of her weight rest on the mattress. Nothing happened. Her chest loosened a fraction. Jake reached for her hand, his thumb brushing over the ring he'd given her. "That night, " he said quietly. "I thought I'd lose you. I thought I was too late. " Her throat tightened. "But you fought," he continued. "You survived things that would have destroyed most people. This bed doesn't get to scare you forever. " She closed her eyes, drawing strength from his words, from his presence, from the steady certainty of his hands on hers. "I don't want to sleep on the floor tonight," she admitted. " Not because I'm not afraid. But because I don't want fear to decide for me. " Jake's voice softened. "Then lie down with me. " He lay back first, leaving her space. Tiana took a shaky breath and lay down beside him, stiff at first, her body braced for pain that never came. Jake turned into his side, careful and slow one hand around her waist only after she nodded. His body was warm, solid and real. She pressed her face into his chest, fingers clutching his shirt, breathing him in like oxygen. The bed creaked softly beneath them. She flinched the force herself to stay despite her bones screaming for her to bolt. "I'm okay, " she whispered though her voice shook. Jake kissed the top of her head, "I know. " Minutes passed. Then more. Her heartbeat slowed, her muscles unclenched. The mattress softened beneath her, no longer a threat, just a surface holding her up. For the first time in years, the bed didn't feel like a place where things were taken from her. It felt like a place where she was held. Tiana let out a safety laugh half disbelief. "I'm doing it. " Jake smiled against her hair, pride swelling in his chest. "You are." God, he was so proud of her. She shifted closer curling herself into him allowing his arms to surround her. "I'm not scared anymore. " she whispered, not entirely true but close enough to feel like victory. Jake tightened his hold on her. "And even if you are, " he said. "I'll never let you face it alone again. " Sleep didn't come immediately. But peace didn't. And for Tiana that was everything.
