CHAPTER SEVENRyan July 9, 2007 Two weeks pass before we realize that none of us have heard from Mallory or Jenna. Renee, Mallory’s mother, calls me after work on a Monday. “Ryan,” she says. No “How are you?” or anything. Her call has a purpose. “I ran into Sandra Marquette at the grocery store on Elm. She said she hasn’t heard from Jenna in over a week. Then I realized I haven’t heard from Mallory either.” There’s angst in her voice. “Oh, they’re probably just exploring and haven’t had time to call home,” I say. “When was the last time you talked to Mallory?” she asks. “Oh, let’s see . . . well, I got a postcard.” My mind is reeling. “I called Mallory when I got home from Thailand and left a message. Then she called me back the next day, which was actually the same day to her . . .”
