CHAPTER 2 : MEETING THE FAMILY

419 Words
Britney's heart skipped a beat as she stepped out of the gate and onto the dusty road, the warm sun beating down on her shoulders. She had been talking to Tony for a few weeks now, and he had finally invited her to meet his family. She was nervous, but excited to see where things were going. As she approached the small, one-story house, a wave of loud laughter and reggae music washed over her. Tony's smile lit up the doorway as he welcomed her with a gentle kiss on the cheek. "Come meet my family, baby girl," he said, leading her inside. Britney's eyes scanned the room, taking in the vibrant colors and chaotic energy. Tony's two younger brothers, Jermaine and Keon, sat on the couch, their eyes narrowing as they took her in. His mother, a stern-looking woman with a worn apron, stood in the kitchen, her arms crossed. "Ah, Tony, who is this?" she asked, her tone dripping with skepticism. "Mom, this is Britney," Tony said, his arm around her shoulders. "My girlfriend." Britney's smile faltered as she felt the weight of their disapproval. Jermaine and Keon snickered, while Tony's mother raised an eyebrow. "Girlfriend? You just break up with Rochelle, and now you're bringing this...girl...home?" The air was thick with tension as Britney tried to keep her cool. She exchanged a glance with Tony, who looked apologetic but didn't intervene. "It's nice to meet you, Mrs...?" Britney said, her voice steady. "Taylor," Tony's mother replied, her expression unyielding. "Welcome, Britney." The rest of the visit was stifled, with Jermaine and Keon making snarky comments and Tony's mother asking pointed questions about Britney's family and background. Britney smiled and laughed, trying to brush it off, but she couldn't shake the feeling that she was being sized up and found wanting. As they walked back to the gate, Tony apologized, "Sorry 'bout my family, they're just protective, you know?" Britney forced a smile. "It's okay, I understand." But as she looked back at the house, she saw Jermaine and Keon watching her, their eyes cold and calculating. Tony's mother stood in the window, her expression unreadable. Britney's instincts screamed at her to run, to get away from these people who seemed to hate her on sight. But she ignored them, choosing to focus on the kind, gentle Tony, who seemed to be the only one on her side. Little did she know, she was walking into a world of trouble, and Tony's family was just the beginning.
