Chapter 16 : A World of Her Own

The air felt different the moment she stepped out of the airport in Milan. Cooler. Faster. Alive. Elegant buildings stretched along the streets, their windows glowing with the warm light of boutiques and cafés. Stylish crowds moved confidently through the city, and everywhere she looked there were hints of creativity—sketchbooks in cafés, models rushing to fittings, designers speaking excitedly about fabrics and trends. This city breathed fashion. And now, for the first time, she was part of it. A black car waited outside the terminal. Her father’s driver greeted her politely and took her suitcase. During the drive, she watched the city carefully through the window. For years she had lived in luxury without understanding how it worked. But this time, she wasn’t here as a sheltered daughter. She was here to learn. The next morning, her father brought her to the European headquarters of their company. The modern glass building stood tall among other corporate towers, its lobby filled with movement and quiet ambition. Employees walked quickly through the halls carrying designs, documents, and fabric samples. “This,” her father said as they stepped inside, “is where your mother’s visions become reality.” She looked around with fascination. Fashion sketches lined the walls. Designers discussed ideas around long tables. Marketing teams analyzed campaign strategies on large digital screens. The empire her parents had built was far more complex than she had ever imagined. Throughout the day, she attended meetings and listened carefully as executives discussed upcoming fashion shows in Paris and new partnerships expanding into New York City. At first, she mostly observed. But slowly, she began asking questions. Thoughtful questions. Questions that surprised the people in the room. Later that evening, her father spoke to her privately in his office. “You’re adapting faster than I expected,” he admitted. “I’m trying to understand everything,” she replied honestly. He studied her quietly. “For years I worried you would resent this world,” he said. “But now I see something different.” “What?” “You’re beginning to belong in it.” The words lingered in her mind long after she left the office. That night, she returned to her hotel room overlooking the glowing streets of Milan. The city looked beautiful from above—alive with possibility. She picked up her phone and called him. When his face appeared on the screen, her heart softened immediately. “You look tired,” he said with a small smile. “Long day,” she admitted. “But a good one.” “Tell me about it.” She spent the next hour describing everything—the busy offices, the designers, the meetings, the energy of the city. He listened patiently, pride clear in his eyes. “I knew you’d shine there,” he said. She leaned against the balcony railing, looking out at the skyline. “I still wish you were here.” “Someday,” he replied gently. The distance between them felt heavy sometimes, but their connection remained strong. Before ending the call, she whispered something she had been thinking about all day. “I’m finally understanding the world my parents built,” she said softly. “But I don’t want to lose the world we built together.” “You won’t,” he assured her. After the call ended, she stayed on the balcony for a long time. The lonely girl who once lived behind mansion gates had changed. Now she was learning to navigate boardrooms, fashion houses, and international business. Yet deep inside, one thing remained the same. No matter how big the world became— Her heart still belonged to the quiet moments, the honest conversations, and the man who had loved her before any spotlight found her.
