It was on Jenny’s fourteenth birthday when she went to the clinic with her mother. She was afraid. Her mother’s voice quavered. “You know, it doesn’t hurt. You step into the chamber and zap, it’s over. The director says there are too many mouths.” She knew it was for the best, but a tear trickled down Jenny’s cheek. The doctor was reassuring. They signed the papers. Her mother kissed her before closing the chamber door. A flash of light signaled the end of a life.
