UNEASE

CHAPTER 2 His face, one seared eternally into my memory, filled me with a swirling mix of emotions. Cedric, the enigmatic man who had now twice come to my rescue, loomed before me, his expression unreadable. "Luna, every time we meet, you're in peril's grip. What troubles did you bring with you tonight?" he asked, his tone tinged with a hint of exasperation. At his question, painful recollections surfaced - of past wounds and words that had cut far deeper than any claw or fang. Confusion swirled within me, for this man remained an enigma. I couldn't deny that he had come to my aid when I needed it most, and yet, his help was one I would rather die than receive. Or perhaps... not, I found myself wondering. But no answers came, for we both had so many questions, the air thick with unease between us. What was the nature of our connection? Why did he continue to risk himself to protect me, when I had done nothing to deserve such kindness? As I stood there, trembling in his arms, I knew I owed him an explanation - about the supernatural forces hunting me, the precious secret I carried, and the desperate need that had driven me to seek out the Harbingers' sanctuary. But the words caught in my throat, my mind racing to comprehend the tangled web of our shared history. In this moment , I felt exposed, uncertain of how much I could truly trust Cedric, despite his timely intervention. The future, for both myself and the unborn life I protected, seemed to hang in the balance. Would he be the key to my salvation... or something more?. Angus, a tall man in a long black suit, emerged from the castle walls at Cedric's call. His dark hair was tied and gelled neatly back, mirroring the regal bearing of his master. "Take the young lady," Cedric instructed, that familiar, beautiful smile gracing his features and revealing his perfect white teeth. "She doesn't seem to possess the stamina to make it the rest of the way." I shook my head, my mind reeling. How could I have been so foolish to think there was anything genuine in Cedric's kindness? This was the same man who had taken advantage of me in my most vulnerable state, nearly two months ago. The memory of that betrayal still stung. As Angus swept me into his arms, I heard Cedric's voice grow taut with barely contained rage. "What do you want from her?" he demanded of the vampire leader. "Lord Harbinger, we were sent by our various masters," the creature responded, its tone laced with a hint of trepidation. "I asked what the lot of you want from a frail woman like her?" Cedric's voice was no longer calm, the fury barely restrained beneath the surface. I had witnessed this side of him before, back when I had been fleeing for my life that fateful night. What was it about me that had drawn the attention of these supernatural forces? And why did Cedric, this mysterious man seem so intent on protecting me, when our history was so fraught with pain and mistrust? The questions multiplied as I found myself once again in the grip of powers beyond my understanding. As Angus carried me towards the looming castle, I could only hope that within its walls, I might finally find the answers and the sanctuary I so desperately sought. The future of myself and my unborn child depended on it. "She stole something precious from us," the vampire leader, Rasp, responded, his tone dripping with menace. I watched as Cedric's expression darkened, the rage I had witnessed before now simmering dangerously beneath the surface. "Luna, what do they want from you?" he demanded, his voice laced with a sense of urgency. But before I could even begin to formulate a reply, an overwhelming fatigue suddenly washed over me. It was as if a heavy blanket of sleep had descended, clouding my mind and blurring my vision. I felt myself slipping away, consciousness slipping through my fingers. The world around me faded into darkness, leaving me with a swirl of unanswered questions. What did these supernatural forces want from me?, Who is this Cedric And why does he, seem so intent on protecting me, when our shared history was so fraught with pain and mistrust? As the shadows enveloped me, I could only hope that within the walls of the Harbingers' castle, I might finally find the sanctuary and the answers I so desperately sought. CHAPTER 3 I slowly regained consciousness, my awareness gradually returning as I stirred in the luxurious bed. Soft, silken sheets enveloped me, more sumptuous than anything I had ever experienced. Pale moonlight filtered in through towering windows, illuminating a chamber far grander than any room I had ever occupied. As the dimly lit space came into focus, a swirl of confusion and questions flooded my mind. How long had I been unconscious? And most importantly, why had I encountered Cedric, of all people, in my time of desperate need? The memory of his unexpected presence and the role he had played in saving me from the vampire's clutches resurfaced, only heightening my bewilderment. What could have possibly led him to be in this place, at this precise moment? Our history was far from amicable, making his sudden reappearance all the more perplexing. I carefully sat up, my gaze sweeping the ornate surroundings. This had to be the Harbingers' fabled castle, the sanctuary I had risked everything to reach. But how had I come to be here, in this luxurious bedchamber? Glancing down at my clothing, I was relieved to find no signs of the perilous confrontation. Had Cedric and his people tended to me while I slept? The thought both comforted and unsettled me, for I knew so little about the enigmatic Harbinger and his true motivations. Steeling myself, I swung my legs over the edge of the bed, determined to seek out answers. I had to understand why these supernatural forces were hunting me, and what role Cedric and the Harbingers might play in my survival. With a deep breath, I rose on unsteady legs, prepared to venture forth and confront the questions that continued to plague me. I knew that I needed to find some answers, not only about Cedric's unexpected presence, but also about the dangers that had so ruthlessly pursued me. With a newfound sense of determination fueling my every move, I decided to venture forth and explore this mysterious castle, intent on seeking the truth. I had come too far, risked too much, to simply remain confined in this opulent bedchamber. The polished oak floors stretched endlessly, ornamental rugs fading to black at the edges of the towering walls. As I stepped out into the grand hallway, my gaze was immediately drawn to the ornate double doors that stood open, offering a glimpse into an expansive room. Drawn by curiosity, I approached the open doors and peered inside. Bookshelves climbed two stories, laden with volumes of books both leather-bound and age-worn. A warm fire crackled in the hearth opposite the shelves, casting a flickering glow across the ebony and ivory furnishings. This was no ordinary dwelling - it was a place of unimaginable wealth and secrets, a sanctuary far grander than anything I had ever experienced. The sheer magnificence of it all only heightened my sense of wonder and trepidation. What manner of people dwelled within these walls, and why had they taken me in immediately. As I took in the sheer opulence and grandeur of this place, it was clear that the Harbinger family possessed immense wealth and resources. The lavish trappings of this castle were a far cry from the simple life I once knew. Yet, despite the lavish surroundings, memories of my harrowing ordeal in the forest came flooding back - the fear, the relentless pursuit, my near death experience and the moment of collapse at the castle gates. The weight of those experiences bore down on me. But where were the inhabitants of this imposing sanctuary? And more pressingly, where was Cedric, the man who had once again saved me from my supernatural pursuers? I was startled from my thoughts when the familiar figure of Angus entered, carrying a tray laden with a steaming tea and freshly made pie. Though his presence offered some comfort in this strange place, I remained wary, uncertain of the Harbingers' true motivations. "I brought you some tea," Angus said calmly, placing the tray on a table at the center of a plush settee. "Please, sit and make yourself comfortable, Miss Luna." As he handed me a delicate porcelain cup and a slice of pie, I decided to probe further. "Is this the master Harbinger's office?" I asked, my curiosity piqued. "No, this is just one of the library wings," Angus replied. "The Harbinger's private study is elsewhere in the castle." I nodded, sipping the fragrant tea as I gathered my thoughts. I couldn't help but ask the question that burned in my mind, despite my better judgment. "Is Cedric here too?" Angus, ever the loyal attendant, responded smoothly, "Master Cedric is attending to guests below." My unease only grew at his words. Was this truly the Harbinger castle as I had been told? And what business did Cedric, of all people, have in meeting with unknown visitors within these walls? Gathering my courage, I pressed the butler further. "And where is the Master Harbinger in all of this?" Angus' reply was equally cryptic, "Attending to matters as always," before making his way to the door. "You've been asleep all day since the early hours of the morning we found you," Angus revealed, peeking through the door. "Return to your chambers and rest until you're summoned. Just ring a bell in any room if you need anything." I nodded, taking in Angus' words with a mix of confusion and unease. "I've been asleep all day?" I murmured, more to myself than to him. The revelation that I had lost an entire day sent my mind reeling. What could have transpired within these castle walls while I lay unconscious and oblivious? The thought unsettled me greatly. And Cedric's presence only compounded my concerns. As Angus had said, the enigmatic man was attending to "guests" below - a detail that piqued my curiosity and suspicion in equal measure. What business did he have meeting with unknown individuals in the Harbingers' domain? "Very well," I responded, doing my best to maintain a calm demeanor. "I shall return to my room and rest as you've suggested. But I expect to be summoned soon, Angus. There are too many unanswered questions for me to simply sit idle." The butler nodded, a faint hint of a smile playing on his lips. "As you wish, my lady. I shall inform the master of your request." With that, he took his leave, closing the door behind him and leaving me alone with my swirling thoughts. I had little faith in Cedric's motives, but I knew I had no choice but to trust in the Harbingers' protection - at least for now. With that I picked up my tray of tea and pie returned back to the lavish bedchamber.
