Chapter 9 — Protecting Vanessa

1005 Words
The lawyers arrived with a folder already tabbed for signature. Olivia watched one of them place it on Richard's desk. The family had found a way to turn a question about a living child into paperwork. Diana sat beside Vanessa. Albert remained near the fireplace. Gabriel stood by the window. Sebastian stayed near the study doors. He had not spoken since answering Olivia's question. Richard opened the folder. "We need a temporary arrangement." "Temporary for whom?" Olivia asked. The attorney began explaining private authentication, genetic verification, and mutual discretion. Olivia held out her hand. "Let me read it." Richard passed her the document. Three provisions mattered immediately. Olivia could not publicly use the Kingstone surname or describe herself as Richard and Eleanor's daughter. She could not contact people connected to Eleanor's foundation or the family's professional network without written approval. She could not speak publicly about the birth, the dead Kingstone infant, or her claim of kinship. The restrictions were detailed. The family's obligations were not. "You had this drafted before I arrived." Richard did not deny it. "We prepare for risk." "You prepared for me." "We prepared for an allegation." Olivia turned the page. The agreement offered a family-controlled apartment, counsel selected and paid by Kingstone, security, medical testing, and an immediate payment large enough to change most lives before the recipient reached the last zero. She closed the folder. "This isn't verification. It's containment." "It is discretion," Edward said. "It isolates me from my mother's foundation and tells me which name I'm allowed to use." "Until we establish that she was your mother," Albert said. Richard looked at him but did not correct the wording. The possibility had entered the room. Olivia placed the folder on the desk. "I'll agree to jointly selected testing and documented verification. I won't agree to silence, a controlled identity, or permission to speak to people connected to Eleanor." "The provisions protect you too," the attorney said. "From what?" "Media intrusion. Fraud allegations. Personal exposure." Richard gestured toward the payment. "The money gives you stability while this is investigated." "I have stability." Albert gave a short laugh. Olivia turned to him. "Do you need a bank statement before you can hear no?" His expression sharpened. He had no idea what she owned, what she had built, or how completely irrelevant the number on Richard's page was to her. Olivia intended to keep it that way. "I did not come here for money." "Then the payment shouldn't matter," Albert said. "It matters because you expect it to work." No one answered. That silence told Olivia more clearly than any clause which daughter the family had chosen to protect. Edward rested both hands on his cane. "Kingstone is publicly traded. A concealed-heir story could affect employees and shareholders before we know whether it is true." "A newborn was targeted inside a hospital," Olivia said. Diana's hand moved over Vanessa's. "Someone removed evidence this week. Diana knew about a medication order she had never been shown. Yet the agreement says the urgent problem is what I might say." Vanessa rose. She had gone pale. "Would you agree not to call yourself his eldest daughter? Just until the testing is complete." Olivia turned toward her. Vanessa clasped her hands. "If this becomes public, every photograph changes. Every foundation event. Every time Dad introduced me as his daughter." "No one can erase that he raised you." "You don't know what people do with a story like this." "No," Olivia said. "I know what families do with it." Vanessa flinched. Olivia regretted how precisely the words landed, but not enough to take them back. "If you are really Eleanor's daughter," Vanessa said, "then every part of my life will look stolen." Diana's thumb moved once over Vanessa's knuckles. Comfort. Possession. Maybe both. "I'm not asking anyone to cancel your adoption," Olivia said. "I'm not asking Richard to stop being your father." Vanessa looked at her. "But I will not remain dead so you can feel secure." Diana stood slowly. "She is frightened." "So am I." The words surprised the room more than they surprised Olivia. "I learned four days ago that someone ordered my death. The woman who saved me died before she finished explaining why. The first archive I found disappeared after Sebastian called Albert. I came here, and your first plan was to restrict my name and access while deciding how much money might make that easier." Sebastian did not move. He accepted the mention of his mistake without trying to explain it. Albert stepped forward. "You keep using that call as leverage." "No. I'm using it as information." Gabriel left the window and picked up the agreement. "You want my preliminary approval on these terms?" he asked the attorney. "Yes." "I won't give it." Albert looked at him. "Why?" "Because Diana referenced a document before anyone acknowledged it existed." Diana's expression stayed composed. "I explained that." "You offered a report you can't identify and a guess you described as memory. I won't certify a process while that inconsistency is open." For the first time since Diana entered, Richard looked at her without reflexively defending her. It lasted only a moment, but Olivia saw Vanessa see it too. Then he faced Olivia. "Vanessa is my daughter." Vanessa lowered her head. "I raised her. I know her. I was there for every year of her life." Richard's voice became quieter. "Even if you are biologically mine, you cannot expect twenty-six years to disappear in one day." "I don't." "Then what do you expect?" Olivia looked around the study. Edward wanted discretion. Albert wanted control. Gabriel wanted proof. Vanessa wanted reassurance that love could not be reassigned by blood. Diana wanted Mara questioned more than she wanted herself questioned. Richard wanted Olivia to ask for something he knew how to give. Money. Housing. Lawyers. A limit he could sign. Olivia rested one hand on her document case. "Vanessa has all of you. Who in this house is willing to protect me?" No one answered.
