The Boardroom Execution

The clock on the wall of the executive conference room struck six in the morning with a cold, metallic chime. Elena sat at a polished black granite conference table in the penthouse of Moretti Tower, downtown Chicago's most formidable skyscraper. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the city was just beginning to wake under a blanket of grey rain clouds. Inside the room, the atmosphere was suffocating. Eight high-ranking executives and syndicate lieutenants sat around the table, their expensive tailored suits unable to mask the thick layer of nervous sweat on their brows. Armed guards stood posted at every exit, their faces emotionless, hands resting casually near their holsters. At the head of the table sat Dante Moretti. He looked impossibly pristine for a man who had been up half the night. His dark hair was styled back, his crisp black suit sharply fitted, and his grey eyes completely devoid of warmth. He rotated a solid gold fountain pen between his fingers, his gaze drifting lazily over the men in front of him. To his immediate right, Elena sat with her encrypted laptop open. On paper, she was introduced to the room as Dante’s new "head of special audits." To the men around the table, she was a complete stranger who held their lives in her hands. "Gentlemen," Dante began, his low voice instantly cutting through the quiet hum of the air conditioning. "Six point four million dollars has been bled from our primary casino accounts over the last six months. It wasn't stolen by our rivals in the North Side. It was stolen by someone sitting in this room." A wave of uncomfortable shifts and panicked glances rippled across the table. "Boss, with all due respect," spoke up Julian Vance—no relation to Elena—a heavy-set man in his late fifties who served as the syndicate’s chief financial officer. He wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief. "Our books are audited weekly. Every transfer goes through my office. If there was a leak, my team would have caught it. This girl... who even is she? You brought in an outsider over your own loyal men?" Dante didn't even blink. He simply tilted his head toward Elena. "Miss Vance. Floor is yours." Elena tapped a single key on her laptop. Instantly, the massive high-definition display screen on the front wall flared to life, projecting a complex financial matrix. The men gasped as bright red lines appeared, highlighting the hidden three-percent variance she had uncovered the night before. "Mr. Vance," Elena said, her voice cool, sharp, and utterly confident as she addressed the CFO. "Your team didn't catch the leak because your team *created* the algorithm." Julian’s face went pale, turning the color of wet chalk. "That's absurd! That's a temporary system glitch in the offshore server mirror—" "It's not a glitch," Elena interrupted smoothly, hitting another key. A second screen opened, displaying a live terminal trace. "A system glitch doesn't convert stolen crypto into physical bearer bonds in Zurich every Tuesday at three in the morning. And a glitch certainly doesn't require a master security key that only three people in this room possess." She looked slowly around the table, her dark eyes pinning each man in turn before settling on Julian. "The script was written in an outdated C++ framework, compiled using a specific compiler signature," Elena continued, rising from her leather chair and walking toward the main screen like a prosecutor in a courtroom. "A compiler signature registered to a private workstation right here in Moretti Tower. Workstation number 09." Dante stopped rotating his gold pen. The room temperature seemed to drop ten degrees. "Workstation 09," Dante repeated softly, his grey eyes turning to ice as he looked directly at Julian. "Isn't that the terminal in your private office, Julian?" "Boss, listen to me!" Julian scrambled to his feet, his chair screeching violently against the marble floor. "She’s setting me up! She’s a nobody! Her brother was caught with the hard drive last night at the Vault—" "Her brother was a decoy," Dante growled, standing up slowly. The sheer physical weight of his presence made Julian take an involuntary step backward. Dante didn't raise his voice, but the quiet authority behind it made every guard in the room shift into a combat stance. "She proved in forty-five seconds what you failed to explain for six months," Dante said, stepping around the table toward his CFO. "You stole from me, Julian. You used a boy as a shield, and you brought an unauthorized threat into my territory." "I didn't! I swear on my life, Boss, I was framed!" Julian stammered, backup backing until his hands pressed against the glass window overlooking the city. "There's a third party! Someone else gave me the code—" "Who?" Dante asked, stopping two inches from the trembling man. Julian opened his mouth to answer, his eyes darting frantically toward the far end of the table where another executive sat in total, stony silence. But before the CFO could utter a single name, a sudden, sharp *ping* resonated from Elena’s laptop terminal. Elena’s eyes snapped to her screen. A secondary automated security protocol had just triggered. "Dante, wait!" Elena called out, breaking protocol and using his first name in front of his men. Dante paused, his hand pausing inches from Julian's collar. He shot her a sharp look. "What is it, Elena?" "Someone is executing a remote wipe protocol right now," Elena said, her fingers blurring across her keyboard as she fought against an incoming digital attack. "Julian’s master terminal isn't just sending data—it's being purged from an outside server! If Julian dies right now, the entire paper trail to the six million dollars gets erased forever!" Julian’s eyes went wide with terror. "See?! I told you! I'm not the mastermind!" Dante didn't hesitate. He grabbed Julian by the lapels of his jacket and slammed him down into an executive chair, turning to Marcus. "Lock him in the lower holding cells. Nobody talks to him, nobody touches him until Miss Vance recovers those logs." "Yes, Boss," Marcus grunted, roughly hauling the pale CFO out of the room alongside two armed guards. The remaining executives sat in terrified silence, staring down at the table, afraid to make eye contact with their leader. Dante adjusted his cuffs, his expression cold as granite. He turned his attention back to Elena, who was furiously typing code, fighting off a high-level cyber attack that was attempting to brick the syndicate's local server array. Her face was illuminated by the green glow of falling code, her brows furrowed in intense concentration. She looked fierce, brilliant, and completely unfazed by the life-or-death drama that had just unfolded inches away from her. Dante walked over to her desk, leaning down until his shadow fell over her keyboard. "Can you stop the wipe?" he asked quietly. "I don't just stop wipes, Mr. Moretti," Elena murmured without looking up, a dangerous, confident smirk playing on her lips. "I bounce them back to the sender." With a final, sharp strike of the Enter key, Elena isolated the incoming virus, trapped it in an encrypted loop, and traced the signal source in real time. A geographic coordinate flashed in red text on her screen. SIGNAL TRACE: SECTOR 4 - DOCKLANDS WAREHOUSE 12 Elena looked up into Dante’s grey eyes. "The person trying to wipe Julian’s terminal isn't in Switzerland. They're sitting in a warehouse at the Chicago docks right now, transferring the rest of your money." A slow, dark, lethal smile spread across Dante’s face. He reached down, closing her laptop screen gently. "Pack your things, Miss Vance," Dante murmured, his voice laced with a dark excitement that made her blood run hot. "You and I are taking a ride to the docks."
