Matt stepped into the office, his jaw tight and his thoughts tangled. The briskness of the air-conditioning did little to cool his rising irritation. As soon as he crossed the threshold, Sam intercepted him. Her bright eyes were wide with concern, her posture tense.
“Matt,” she said, her voice urgent as she blocked his path, “is everything okay? What’s going on?”
He sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose before glancing at her. “Emily is fine,” he said curtly, hoping the explanation would end there.
But Sam wasn’t one to let things go so easily. “Fine? What does that mean?” she pressed, her tone sharpening. “What happened to her? I’ve been trying to get answers from Derek, but he’s been tight-lipped. You’re the only one who seems to know what’s really going on.”
