Something was wrong. Crystal had been having pain in her lower left abdominal for some time. Today was the day she would go to the doctor to see what was going on. She walked up to the check in desk. Her anxiety was building. She prayed nothing serious was wrong. She had children to care for. When they called her name, she stood and went back slowly. The nurse took her vitals and escorted her to the examination room. When the doctor walked in, she was quickly put at ease. The doctor was a sweet elderly round lady. Crystal smiled thinking she looked like a female version of Santa Claus.
Crystal explained what was going on and answered some questions for the doctor. The doctor asked her to lay down on the table. She pressed on Crystal’s stomach. Crystal jumped from the pain. She looked at Crystal and told her she had been around for a long time and she believed she had diverticulitis. Crystal had never heard of it. The doctor told her that it was a bad spot in her intestine where bacteria builds up due to lack of fiber in a diet resulting in inadequate bowl movements. She made a call and told Crystal to go up to the third floor and they would perform a colonoscopy to see how bad it was. She would call her when the result came back. Crystal nervously went upstairs. While waiting her turn to go back she called her sister to let her know what was going on. She was going to be a little later than originally planned. Christina had been a godsend over the years helping her out when needed. She was called back for her colonoscopy. When it was over, they told her the same thing her doctor had told her and sent her on her way. That was one procedure Crystal would prefer not to do again. Two days later Crystal received a call from her doctor’s office to set up an appointment. The doctor wanted to see Crystal the next day.
Crystal walked into the doctor’s office once again. She prayed that there was nothing major going on. Same routine, wait, vitals, wait, visit with the doctor. The doctor opened the file. She told Crystal that normally she would just tell people to add more fiber to their diet but this time she felt it would be best to do surgery. Crystal was getting older and if it got any worse later she may be at an age where they would not do the surgery. They made the appointment for the following month. In the meantime, Crystal was given some pain medication and told to add more fiber to her diet.
Crystal left to go see Christina. She would need her help through this. Crystal started preparing her checklist to ensure nothing was dropped while she was down from her surgery. The doctor estimated she would be out of commission at least six weeks.
Emma looked scared to death. Jacob just stared at his Nana with tears in his eyes. She assured them that everything would be alright. Sometimes as people get older, they have problems and the doctors must fix them.
Jacob and Emma were growing so fast. They had been living with their Nana for eight years now. Jacob would be going to high school when school started back. She could not believe she already had a high schooler on her hands. In addition to that, Emma had started wearing makeup. Crystal had taken her for a makeup lesson on how to make it look natural. She was not allowing any goth looking styles like Janice had worn as an adult.
Crystal had her surgery with no complications. She just had to take it easy for a while. The kids and Christina made sure she took it easy until she healed properly. The doctor said everything was good and she could get back to her normal life.
Crystal had been scared by the experience but had prayed on it and was thankful for the outcome.
