Theodora straightened with care. She was in an alley filled with trash and debris, a site perfectly suited to the decomposition of the mercenary shade. His fallen body was still smoking from the hit from her laze and her heart was pounding. He’d come dangerously close to finishing her off, but she’d managed to get him first. Theodora recognized she’d been lucky. She exhaled slowly. It had been a long and convoluted chase, and now it was getting dark. She checked the charge on her laze and grimaced. She really needed some downtime and some juice. Her temple was still raw and she had a massive headache. She dumped a bin of trash over the corpse, knowing that scavengers would find his body anyway. It was tempting to take his laze, but she knew that possession of it would only condemn her.
