THE ALPHA'S LIE
Cassian stood before the Moon Council.
Seven men surrounded him.
Seven faces filled with old secrets.
"Where is she?"
Councilman Varis didn't answer.
Cassian's hand slammed against the table.
"I asked where Lyra is."
Varis remained calm.
"She has crossed into forbidden territory."
"With Darian."
"Yes."
"And Riven Blackthorn."
Another silence.
Cassian's wolf snarled.
"You knew."
Varis raised an eyebrow.
"Knew what?"
"That Lyra's bloodline was awakening."
Varis smiled.
"Your concern is admirable."
"My concern?"
Cassian leaned forward.
"You lied to me."
"No."
"You told me her bloodline was cursed."
"It is dangerous."
"That's not what I asked."
Varis stood.
"You were given a choice."
Cassian stared.
"You told me accepting her would cause a war."
"It could."
"You told me her father was a traitor."
"He was."
Cassian's eyes narrowed.
"I saw the records."
Varis's expression changed.
Barely.
But Cassian saw it.
"Which records?"
"The original ones."
Varis smiled.
"There are many versions of history, Alpha."
Cassian felt cold.
"What did you do to Lyra's family?"
Varis said nothing.
Cassian's wolf pushed forward.
His eyes flashed.
"Answer me."
Varis finally spoke.
"Your mate is dangerous."
"That isn't an answer."
"She will destroy the balance."
Cassian stepped closer.
"Then why did the Moon choose her?"
Varis smiled.
"Perhaps the Moon made a mistake."
Cassian froze.
The words struck him.
The Moon didn't make mistakes.
His father had taught him that.
Every Alpha had.
Every shifter knew it.
The mate system was sacred.
Unless—
Cassian's expression hardened.
"What have you done?"
Varis stepped back.
"Nothing that wasn't necessary."
Cassian left the chamber.
His mind raced.
For the first time, he questioned everything.
His father's death.
Lyra's father.
The prophecy.
The rejection.
The Council.
And then he felt it.
The broken bond.
Lyra.
She was afraid.
But beneath the fear was something else.
Anger.
Power.
Cassian whispered her name.
"Lyra."
His wolf answered.
Find her.
This time—
Cassian didn't argue.
He summoned his horse.
He would find her.
Not as Alpha.
Not as her mate.
But as the man who had finally realized he had been manipulated.
