I woke up with a feeling that someone’s playing with my hair. Obviously, it was him. The feeling tickles mw, but I don’t want to let him know.
“So you’re awake now? You’re quite a deep sleeper.” He said as soon as I opened my eyes. I noticed that he’s still hugging me even though I’m already okay.
“Yeah, you can let go of me now.” I responded, not really meaning what I said.
It then hit him. “O-okay. Sorry.”
Het let me go and put his shirt on after. It was already dry. We went out of the car since it already stopped pouring. It was almost dark, so we decided to clean up and go home.
We talked as we drive, not thinking much of the disaster we just had. He asked if we can go to church together the next day. I was surprised to know that he’s a Catholic. What I knew from the internet that he’s a Christian, and that’s it.
“Are you sure?” I asked, hoping he’ll say yes. “I usually go in the afternoon. You might be busy.”
He chuckled. “I told you I’m on break. Besides, I won’t ask if I can’t.”
“Oh, yeah. I forgot.” I gave him a shy smile as affirmation. A victory dance happening in my mind.
“How I wish we can stay this way for a long time.” He suddenly said after taking a turn going to the highway back to my house.
Huh?! What’s that about? I was startled by what he blurted, but ashamed to ask.
“Oh yeah, can you sing for me?” he unexpectedly asked out of nowhere.
“What?! Why not just put on some music?” I protested, trying to reach for the stereo.
My hand stopped mid-air when I heard his plea. “Please... I’m tired of my playlist, haven’t updated for a while now.”
He gave me his cutest puppy dog eyes. God! Why can’t I resist that look?
“Fine!” I gave in. “But my voice ain’t that good, so prepare your ears.” I joked.
I cleared my throat. And after taking a dep breath, I closed my eyes and let the words flow:
I'll always remember
It was late afternoon
It lasted forever
And ended so soon, yeah
You were all by yourself
Staring up at a dark gray sky
I was changed
In places no one will find
All your feelings so deep inside
It was there that I realized
That forever was in your eyes
The moment I saw you cry
It was late in September
And I've seen you before
You were always the cold one
But I was never that sure
You were all by yourself
Staring up at a dark gray sky
I was changed
In places no one will find
All your feelings so deep inside
Was there that I realized
That forever was in your eyes
The moment I saw you cry
I wanted to hold you
I wanted to make it go away
I wanted to know you
I wanted to make your everything
All right
I'll always remember
It was late afternoon
In places no one will find
All your feelings so deep inside
Was there that I realized
That forever was in your eyes
The moment I saw you cry
Baby cry
Moment that I saw you cry
Oh no, no
I think I saw you cry
The moment I saw you cry
I wanted to know you
There was silence after a few seconds. So, I opened my eyes to see his reaction. I feel like a human tomato upon seeing him giving me a short applause.
“That was really good,” he finally said. “and your voice isn’t that bad either.”
“Why did you choose that song, by the way?” was his follow up question.
“Well...” I sighed before continuing. “That’s how I met you.” I answered with all honesty. I somehow able to say that looking him straight to the eyes.
He looked back without a blink. A smile on his cherry lips. “I really like you.”
That one blew me off completely. I just smiled back as I was left speechless during the remainder of the journey.
If he only knew.
***********
When we arrived, he offered to walk me to the door. I insisted to wash the blanket much to his disagreement.
“It’s the least I can do after all the effort you did today.” I sincerely said.
He shook his head. “That’s nothing.” He looked down scratching his neck. “Actually, I should say sorry because I wasn’t able to plan well. I should’ve checked the weather first thing.”
Aww... He’s really like a kid...
“I still insist.” I retorted. “It’s not your fault. Even forecasts can’t be accurate. So, I’ll just return this to you tomorrow.”
I grabbed the blanket again from him, as he continues to take it away from me.
“I’ll see you tomorrow then.” I finally said. “Thanks again for today.”
I was about to turn around to get inside, when he stopped me.
“Wait a second.” He grabbed my right arm so I’d face him again.
Oh dear! You sure are handsome, but a wet blanket sure is heavy. I slight irritation is slowly growing.
“Will you please stop saying thank you?” I think he’s more annoyed now compared to me. “I don’t need your appreciation.”
What now?! Why??
His face is all serious, which makes the atmosphere a bit uncomfortable. Though, I don’t really understand where he’s coming from.
“I don’t understand. Why shouldn’t I” I was really puzzled, so I asked him. “You’re the first person who went the extra mile just for me.”
“I don’t want to be rude, but you’re acting weird lately.” I can’t help but voice out my thoughts. “What’s with you? You said we’re friends, so tell me what’s going on?”
“N-nothing...” realization hitting him. “Sorry about that. I’ll just see you tomorrow.”
He just walked away without a look back, my question unanswered. I was left standing there as I gaze on his departing car.
How completely absurd!
