CHAPTER 16

Maria's eyes fluttered open as the first rays of sunlight streamed into the room. She shifted slightly and felt the warmth of Giovanni's breath on her neck. Memories of the previous night came flooding back, and she felt a wave of shame wash over her. Carefully, she extracted herself from Giovanni's embrace, trying not to disturb him. As she stood up from the bed, the cool air of the room sent a shiver down her spine. She quickly pulled on clothing and gathered her hair in a habit. She didn't want to waste any more time. As she tiptoed towards the door, she risked a glance back at Giovanni's sleeping form. His chest rose and fell with each breath, and he looked so peaceful. Maria felt a pang of guilt and sadness. She had allowed herself to be seduced by him, and now she had to face the consequences. She took a deep breath and opened the door, slipping out of the room and into the corridor. As Maria walked through the quiet halls of the convent, her mind raced with thoughts of what had happened the previous night. She knew she had to get away from Giovanni, but she also couldn't bear the thought of never seeing him again. She reached the Mother Superior's chambers and knocked softly on the door. "Come in," came the kind voice from within. Maria stepped inside and bowed her head respectfully. "Mother Superior, I am here to request a transfer to another convent. I cannot stay here any longer." The Mother Superior looked at Maria with a knowing expression. "My child, you are safer here in the convent. I understand that you had a moment of weakness, but we cannot let that cloud our judgment." Maria felt her heart sink. She had hoped that the Mother Superior would understand and grant her request. "But Mother, I cannot stay here knowing what I have done." The Mother Superior placed a comforting hand on Maria's shoulder. "My dear, you are not a nun. You have not taken any vows. You are free to leave if you wish, but know that you will always have a place here in the convent." Maria felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes. She knew that the Mother Superior was right, but she also knew that she had to face Giovanni and put an end to this madness. With a heavy heart, Maria submitted to the Mother Superior's wishes and retreated back to her chambers. She knelt down in front of the altar and prayed for strength and guidance. As she sat there, her thoughts drifted back to Giovanni. She couldn't stop thinking about him and the way he made her feel. She knew that she had to avoid him at all costs if she wanted to stay true to her faith and her vows. She made a mental list of all the places she could go to avoid him - the library, the kitchen, the garden. She even thought about pretending to be sick just to avoid any chance encounters. As she sat there lost in thought, she knew that her life would never be the same again. But she also knew that she had to stay strong and true to her faith, no matter what.
