Chapter 9: Sister Agatha's Visit After hours of praying and painting portraits, Maria retired to her small room in the convent. She sat down on the edge of her bed, feeling exhausted and drained from the day's activities. But her mind was still racing with thoughts of her past and the secrets she had kept hidden for so long. As she sat there lost in thought, she heard a soft knock on her door. Maria hesitated before standing up to answer it. She opened the door to find Sister Agatha standing there, her expression serious. "Sister Maria, may I come in?" Sister Agatha asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Maria nodded, stepping aside to allow her in. Sister Agatha closed the door behind her and sat down on a small wooden chair in the corner of the room. Maria sat on her bed, feeling nervous. "What brings you here, Sister?" Maria asked, trying to keep her voice steady. Sister Agatha hesitated for a moment before speaking. "I wanted to talk to you about something important," she said, her eyes fixed on Maria's. Maria felt a shiver run down her spine, wondering what could be so important that Sister Agatha had to visit her at night. "It's about your past, Sister Maria," Sister Agatha said, her voice low. "I know that you were once Princess Isabella of Castile." Maria gasped, feeling as though the ground had been pulled out from under her feet. She had always thought that only the Mother Superior knew her secret, and even then, only to protect her. "How did you find out?" Maria asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Sister Agatha smiled sadly. "My dear, I have known since the day you arrived at the convent," she said. "The Mother Superior's actions earlier were done for show, to make it seem as though she didn't know your true identity. But there are others in the convent who know the truth." Maria felt a sense of relief and betrayal all at once. She had trusted the Mother Superior with her life, but now it seemed as though she had been deceived all along. "But why are you telling me this now?" Maria asked, feeling confused. Sister Agatha leaned forward, her voice barely audible. "Because I want to help you, Sister Maria," she said. "I want to help you reclaim your rightful place as princess, to help you find your way back to your kingdom." Maria felt tears welling up in her eyes, touched by Sister Agatha's kindness. "How can you help me?" Maria asked, feeling hopeful for the first time in years. Sister Agatha smiled, her eyes sparkling. "My cousin, Tommasa, was your lady-in-waiting," she said. "She was the one who smuggled you out of your kingdom and brought you to safety. She knows the land like the back of her hand, and she can help you reclaim your throne." Maria felt her heart racing with excitement. The thought of finally reclaiming her past and finding a way back to her kingdom was almost too much to bear. "Thank you, Sister Agatha," Maria said, her voice trembling. "Thank you for everything." Sister Agatha stood up, placing a hand on Maria's shoulder. "You are not alone, Sister Maria," she said. "We are all here to help you in any way we can." Maria nodded, feeling a sense of hope and purpose that she hadn't felt in a long time. She knew that the road ahead would be long and difficult, but with the help of Sister Agatha and Tommasa, she had a chance to reclaim what was rightfully hers.
