Chapter 3: A Dangerous Game Giovanni's interest in Sister Maria only grew stronger with each passing day. He found himself wandering through the streets of Venice, constantly on the lookout for her. One evening, as he was strolling through the Piazza San Marco, he spotted her standing outside the Doge's Palace, her face set in a determined expression. He approached her cautiously, not wanting to startle her. "Sister Maria, what are you doing here?" "I am here to deliver a letter of protest to the Doge," Sister Maria replied, holding out a rolled-up piece of parchment. Giovanni took the parchment from her, unrolling it carefully. "And what does this letter say?" "It protests against the recent increase in taxes on the poor," Sister Maria replied, her voice strong. Giovanni raised an eyebrow. "And do you really think the Doge will listen to your protests?" Sister Maria looked at him, her eyes flashing. "It is not about whether he listens or not. It is about standing up for what is right." Giovanni smiled at her, his eyes bright. "You are a woman after my own heart, Sister. I admire your spirit." Sister Maria looked away, her cheeks flushing. "Please, Brother Giovanni, do not say such things." Giovanni leaned in closer to her, his voice low. "Why not? Is it not true? You are a woman of conviction, a woman who is not afraid to stand up to authority." Sister Maria pulled away from him, her face turning red. "I...I must go now. The hour grows late." Giovanni watched as she disappeared into the night, a small smile playing at the corners of his mouth. He knew that he was playing a dangerous game with Sister Maria, but he couldn't help himself. She was like no other woman he had ever met, and he was drawn to her like a moth to a flame. Over the next few weeks, Giovanni continued to seek out Sister Maria at every opportunity. He would find her in the market, selling herbs and potions to the local villagers, or in the churches, lighting candles and saying prayers. He was fascinated by her every move, her every word. But he knew that he could not keep up this charade forever. Sister Maria was a nun, after all, and he was a known womanizer. He was playing a dangerous game, and he knew that eventually, his luck would run out. But for now, he could not resist the pull of Sister Maria's fiery spirit, and he would continue to court danger as long as he could.
