Chapter Nineteen Mina’s face was inches from my own when I awoke. We could have been lovers sharing a bed, staring longingly into one another’s eyes as we were roused from sweet, half-forgotten dreams. I could have reached out and touched her; I could have shifted my head by half an inch and pressed my lips to her. Except Mina had no eyes. Not anymore. What I was staring into were two bloody holes, filled with so much fluid and pulp that I couldn’t actually make anything out. The eyeballs themselves lay discarded and half-crushed on the floor between us. Her mouth was hanging open. Wide open, too wide to be a scream, too wide to be natural. Her jaw was resting on her still chest, connected to the top portion of her skull by little more than a few thin strands of stretched, bloodied fles
