The courthouse was smaller than Elena had imagined.
There was no white aisle covered in flowers. No orchestra. No crowd waiting to watch a bride walk toward the man she loved.
There was only a narrow hallway, a few wooden chairs, and a clerk arranging papers on a desk.
Elena stood before the marriage certificate, staring at the two names written beside each other.
Elena Hart.
Adrian Blackwood.
Her stomach twisted.
Seeing the names together made everything real.
"Are you all right?"
Adrian stood beside her in a dark suit, calm as ever.
Elena looked at him.
"I don't know."
He studied her for a moment.
"You don't have to do this."
Her eyes widened.
"What?"
"If you have changed your mind, tell me now. I will take you home."
"You would really let me walk away?"
"Yes."
There was no hesitation in his voice.
Something about that answer touched a place inside her that still hurt.
Damian had once made her feel as though she had to beg to be chosen.
Adrian was giving her a choice.
"I am scared," she admitted.
"I know."
"I don't know what I am doing."
"Neither do I."
She looked at him in surprise.
"You are scared too?"
A faint smile touched his lips.
"Terrified."
A small laugh escaped her.
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
"There. You laughed."
"I did not."
"You did."
"That was barely a laugh."
"It still counts."
She shook her head, and for the first time that morning, the tightness in her chest eased.
Maybe this wasn't the disaster she had thought it would be.
Maybe it was simply two strangers stepping into something neither of them understood.
The judge entered the room.
Everyone settled down.
Elena's mother immediately took her hand.
"Are you sure, sweetheart?"
Elena looked at her mother.
"No."
Her mother's face fell.
Elena squeezed her hand.
"But I want to try."
Her father stood quietly beside them. He still looked uncomfortable with the entire arrangement, but he had come.
That alone meant more than Elena could say.
The judge began the ceremony.
Elena listened carefully.
She had made promises before.
She had believed those promises would last forever.
Until Damian had looked her in the eyes and walked away.
She forced the memory aside.
"Elena Hart," the judge said. "Do you take Adrian Blackwood to be your lawful wedded husband?"
Elena turned toward Adrian.
He wasn't looking at the judge.
He was looking at her.
Waiting.
Not forcing her.
Not demanding an answer.
Just waiting.
Elena took a slow breath.
"I do."
The judge turned to Adrian.
"Adrian Blackwood, do you take Elena Hart to be your lawful wedded wife?"
"I do."
"You may kiss the bride."
Elena's eyes widened.
She hadn't thought about that part.
Adrian noticed immediately.
"Would you rather I didn't?"
She glanced at her parents, then back at him.
"A cheek kiss is fine."
He nodded.
He leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss against her cheek.
It lasted barely a second.
Yet Elena's heart skipped.
It was ridiculous.
She had spent years imagining what it would feel like to marry Damian.
Now a simple kiss from a man she barely knew had made her nervous.
The judge stamped the certificate.
"Congratulations. You are now husband and wife."
Husband and wife.
Elena stared at the certificate.
For the first time, she saw the new name clearly.
Elena Blackwood.
Her mother pulled her into a tight hug.
"My baby."
"Don't cry, Mum."
"I am allowed to cry."
"You were crying before the ceremony."
"That was different."
Her mother held her face.
"Are you happy?"
Elena hesitated.
She wasn't happy in the way she had once imagined being a bride.
She wasn't in love.
She wasn't certain.
But she wasn't broken anymore.
"I think I will be."
Her mother smiled through her tears.
"Then I will be happy for you."
Her father approached Adrian.
The warmth in the room disappeared.
He looked Adrian straight in the eyes.
"If you hurt my daughter, you will have a problem with me."
Adrian didn't flinch.
"I understand."
"I am serious."
"So am I."
Her father frowned.
"You barely know her."
"I know."
"And yet you married her."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Adrian glanced at Elena.
"Because she needed someone to stand beside her."
Her father's expression softened slightly.
"And if she decides she doesn't want you anymore?"
Adrian answered without hesitation.
"Then I will let her go."
Elena's throat tightened.
Her father studied him for a long moment before finally nodding.
"Good answer."
He turned to Elena and pulled her into his arms.
"I don't understand this," he whispered. "But I love you enough to support you."
Elena closed her eyes.
"Thank you, Dad."
"Just be careful."
"I will."
Outside, the afternoon sun greeted them.
Elena stopped on the courthouse steps and looked around.
Cars passed. People walked by. The world continued as though nothing had changed.
But everything had changed.
A few days ago, she had walked out of a wedding hall as a woman whose heart had been shattered.
Today, she walked out as Adrian Blackwood's wife.
She looked at him.
"Is this really happening?"
Adrian glanced at her.
"Unfortunately."
Elena stared at him.
Then she realized he was joking.
She laughed.
"You are terrible."
"I have been told that before."
Her smile remained for a moment before she became serious.
"Adrian."
"Yes?"
"What happens now?"
He opened the car door for her.
"Now we go home."
Elena paused.
Home.
The word felt unfamiliar.
But strangely, it didn't scare her.
She got into the car.
As Adrian joined her, Elena looked through the window.
She didn't look back.
She didn't search for Damian.
She didn't wonder whether he regretted leaving her.
For the first time since that terrible wedding, she allowed herself to look ahead.
She didn't know what waited for her.
She only knew one thing.
Whatever came next, she would face it as Elena Blackwood.
