THE MARRIAGE PROPOSAL

719 Words
Elena stood in her bedroom and looked at her phone. Adrian's number was saved in her contacts. She had saved it the night before, not sure why. Not sure if she would ever use it. Now she stared at the screen. Her thumb hovered over the call button. She thought about Damian. About his cold eyes. About the way he had walked away without looking back. About the years she had wasted. She thought about her parents. About the worry in their eyes. About the shame that would follow her for the rest of her life. She thought about Adrian. About his calm face. About his steady voice. About the way he had defended her without asking for anything in return. She pressed call. The line rang twice. "Hello." Adrian's voice was deep and calm. It was the same voice she had heard at the altar. The same steady presence that had anchored her when everything else was falling apart. "Adrian?" "Yes." "It's Elena." "I know." She swallowed. "I've made my decision." A brief silence. "I'm listening." She took a breath. "I'll marry you." Another pause. "Are you certain?" "No," she admitted. "But I don't have any better options." "You could stay with your family." "To do what? Become the woman everyone pities? The abandoned bride? The one who couldn't keep her man?" "Is that how you see yourself?" "It's how everyone else will see me." Adrian was quiet for a moment. "You're wrong." "What?" "People will see you as the woman who refused to stay broken. They'll see you as the woman who stood up and walked forward. That's what they'll see. That's what I see." Elena closed her eyes. She felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes again. The tears she thought she had cried out. The tears she thought were gone. "Thank you," she whispered. "For what?" "For saying that." "It's the truth." "Even if it is... I'm still scared." "Fear is natural. It's what you do with it that matters." Elena let out a shaky breath. "You sound like a philosopher." "I sound like someone who's been through hard things." "Is that supposed to make me feel better?" "No. It's supposed to make you feel understood." She paused. "What if I'm making a mistake?" "Then we'll fix it together." "Together?" "Yes. That's what marriage means. Facing things together." Elena thought about that. Together. It was such a simple word. But it felt foreign on her tongue. She had always handled things alone. Always carried her own burdens. Always been the strong one. Maybe it was time to let someone else carry some of the weight. "Okay," she said finally. "I'm in." "Good." "When do we get married?" "As soon as possible." She frowned. "How soon?" "Tomorrow." "Tomorrow?" She nearly dropped the phone. "That's too fast." "You said you wanted to start over." "I do. But—" "The longer you wait, the longer the gossip spreads. The longer you stay in your parents' house, the more people will talk." "Is that why you want to do it so quickly?" "No. I want to do it quickly because I believe in acting when you're certain. And you sound certain." Elena took a shaky breath. "I don't feel certain." "No one feels certain in the beginning. Certainty comes with time." "Then how do I know I'm not making a mistake?" "You don't. But you keep going anyway. That's what makes the difference." Elena felt something shift inside her chest. A small ember of determination. "Tomorrow," she repeated. "Where?" "The courthouse. No cameras. No reporters. Just us and our witnesses." "And your grandmother?" Adrian paused. "She doesn't know yet. But she'll be happy." "She doesn't even know me." "She knows you. She told me you have a beautiful heart. She's rarely wrong about people." Elena didn't know what to say. So she said nothing. "Elena." His voice softened. "Are you still with me?" "Yes." "Then I'll see you tomorrow." "Okay." "Goodbye, Elena." "Goodbye, Adrian." She ended the call and looked at her phone. She still didn't know who she was marrying. She still didn't know if this was the right decision. But she knew one thing for sure. She would not let Damian's betrayal define her. She would build something new. Something better. She would rise.
