Elena slowly lifted her head.
A man stood near the back of the hall.
He had been there earlier.
She remembered seeing him.
But she hadn't paid attention.
Why would she?
She had been too busy waiting for Damian.
Now she looked at him properly.
He wore a black suit that fit him perfectly.
His dark hair was neatly styled, but not in a way that looked forced.
His hands rested casually inside his pockets.
He didn't look angry.
He looked controlled.
Too controlled.
His eyes were the only thing that gave him away.
They were sharp.
He had been watching.
Elena wiped her cheeks.
"Who are you?"
He walked toward her.
"Someone who was invited."
"By whom?"
"My grandmother."
"Who is your grandmother?"
"Margaret Blackwood."
Elena blinked.
She remembered.
The elderly woman at the hospital.
The woman who had smiled at everyone.
The woman who had complained that hospital food was terrible.
The woman who had once held Elena's hand and asked if she had eaten.
"Mrs. Margaret?"
The man's expression softened.
"Yes."
Elena stared at him.
"She was your grandmother?"
"Yes."
"I didn't know."
"She didn't tell you."
Elena wiped another tear.
"Is she alright?"
"She's fine."
Relief crossed Elena's face.
"I'm glad."
The man studied her.
"My grandmother likes you."
Elena gave a tired laugh.
"She barely knew me."
"She knew enough."
"What does that mean?"
"She said you were kind."
Elena shrugged.
"I was doing my job."
"Most people do their jobs."
He paused.
"Not everyone does them with kindness."
Elena didn't know how to respond.
She looked around.
Most of the guests had left.
Her wedding had ended.
Her marriage had never begun.
And this stranger was standing in front of her talking about kindness.
She almost laughed.
"Why are you still here?"
"Because I wanted to make sure you were alright."
"I'm not."
"I know."
"Then there is nothing you can do."
"Perhaps."
He glanced toward the doors Damian had walked through.
"I saw what happened."
Elena's jaw tightened.
"I don't want to talk about it."
"Then we won't."
She looked at him suspiciously.
"You're not going to tell me everything happens for a reason?"
"No."
"Good."
"I don't believe that every painful thing happens for a reason."
She looked at him.
"Then what do you believe?"
"Sometimes terrible things happen because people make terrible choices."
Elena stared at him.
For the first time that day, she almost smiled.
"You're surprisingly honest."
"I try to be."
She looked down at her dress.
"I can't believe I'm standing here talking to a stranger."
"You don't have to."
"I know."
He was silent.
Then he said, "My name is Adrian."
Elena looked at him.
"Adrian?"
"Adrian Blackwood."
She froze.
"The Blackwoods?"
"Yes."
"The Blackwood family?"
"Yes."
Elena stared.
Everyone knew the Blackwoods.
They were one of the most powerful families in the city.
Their name was attached to hotels, companies, property and investments.
She looked at Adrian again.
"You are a Blackwood."
"I am."
"And you came to my wedding?"
"My grandmother insisted."
Elena let out a humorless laugh.
"She has terrible timing."
Adrian almost smiled.
"She usually has excellent timing."
"Not today."
"No."
Silence fell between them.
Then Adrian looked at her.
"I have something to ask you."
Elena frowned.
"What?"
"Would you marry me?"
She stared at him.
The hall seemed to go completely silent again.
"What?"
"Marry me."
Elena blinked.
Then she laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
"Are you serious?"
"Yes."
"You don't know me."
"I know enough."
"You've spoken to me for less than ten minutes."
"I've watched you longer than that."
Her laughter disappeared.
"What?"
"I watched how you treated my grandmother."
Elena looked confused.
"I didn't know you were there."
"I wasn't."
"Then how?"
"She told me."
Elena shook her head.
"This is crazy."
"Probably."
"You saw me get abandoned at my wedding and decided to propose to me?"
"Not exactly."
"Then explain it."
Adrian took a breath.
"I saw a woman today who was humiliated in front of hundreds of people. I also saw that woman worry about an elderly patient she hadn't seen in weeks."
Elena frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
"My grandmother."
"She had a heart condition. Anyone would have been concerned."
"She told me you used your own money to buy her something she needed."
Elena looked away.
"It wasn't important."
"It was to her."
She didn't answer.
Adrian continued.
"You didn't know she was wealthy. You didn't know her family name. You didn't know who I was."
"So?"
"So you treated her like a person."
Elena crossed her arms.
"That is a very strange reason to marry someone."
"I didn't say it was a normal reason."
"Then why?"
Adrian looked directly into her eyes.
"Because character matters."
Elena swallowed.
He wasn't flirting.
He wasn't smiling.
He wasn't trying to charm her.
He sounded completely serious.
"Do you love me?"
"No."
The answer came immediately.
Elena blinked.
"At least you're honest."
"I don't believe in lying to make people comfortable."
"Then why should I marry you?"
"You shouldn't."
She frowned.
"What?"
"If you don't want to, don't."
"Then why did you ask?"
"Because I thought you deserved a choice."
"A choice?"
"Yes."
Adrian glanced toward the closed doors.
"Today, someone made a decision for you. He decided that your future would end because he no longer wanted the life you planned together."
Elena's throat tightened.
Adrian continued.
"I'm offering you another choice."
"What kind of choice?"
"A new beginning."
She stared at him.
"Marriage."
"Yes."
"With you."
"Yes."
She shook her head.
"This is insane."
"Maybe."
"What would we even be?"
"A married couple."
"That is not an answer."
"It is the simplest answer."
"Would this be real?"
"At first, it would be an arrangement."
"A marriage of convenience."
"Yes."
Elena looked away.
"And what would you get?"
Adrian was quiet for a moment.
"Peace."
She looked back at him.
"Peace?"
"My grandmother likes you. She has been trying to convince me to settle down for years."
Elena almost smiled.
"She sounds persistent."
"She is."
"And you think marrying me will make her stop?"
"I think it will make her happy."
Elena shook her head.
"So I'm supposed to marry a stranger to make his grandmother happy?"
"No."
He stepped slightly closer.
"You would marry me because you want a way forward."
Elena stared at him.
A way forward.
The words touched something inside her.
She looked at the altar.
The flowers.
The empty chairs.
The place where Damian had stood.
She closed her eyes.
She could still hear his voice.
I don't love you anymore.
Her chest hurt.
"I don't know."
"You don't have to decide now."
Elena opened her eyes.
"Why are you being so calm?"
"Because one of us should be."
That almost made her smile.
Almost.
She shook her head.
"I need to go home."
"I understand."
She turned.
Then stopped.
"Adrian."
"Yes?"
"If I say no, will you be offended?"
"No."
"If I say yes, will you regret it?"
He looked at her for a long moment.
"I don't know."
It was the first uncertain answer he had given her.
Elena nodded.
"At least you're honest."
"I told you I would be."
She walked away.
Adrian watched her leave.
He didn't follow.
He didn't call her name.
He simply stood there.
And for the first time since she was sixteen, Elena walked away from a man without knowing what he wanted from her.
