Chapter 7:
**********
By Friday afternoon, the high-stakes Scandinavian expansion strategy was fully compiled. The dossier was set to be transmitted directly to the international client board at 5:00 PM—a monumental milestone that represented weeks of grueling, round-the-clock labor.
At 4:15 PM, Victoria sat at her desk reviewing the master files one last time before final sign-off.
Suddenly, her office door swung open without a knock.
Julian Thorne, a senior partner from the rival corporate acquisition division—a man notorious for his ruthless internal politics—stepped into the room. He held a thick red folder, a smug, cold expression plastered across his face. Behind him walked David, looking unusually pale and agitated.
"Victoria," David said, his voice strained. "We have a critical issue."
Victoria closed her laptop slightly, her instincts immediately shifting into high alert. "What's going on, David?"
Julian tossed the red folder onto her desk with a loud, theatrical thud. "What's going on, Miss Wood, is a severe breach of corporate compliance. It seems three major proprietary valuation models from your Scandinavian dossier were leaked to an external advisory group twenty minutes ago."
Victoria’s heart dropped into her stomach. "That’s impossible. The master files are stored on an encrypted local server accessible only by Bryan and myself."
"Exactly," Julian sneered, leaning over her desk. "Which means the leak came directly from inside this suite. And given that your account credentials were used to access the encrypted server at 3:45 PM today, compliance is preparing to suspend your lead position immediately pending a full internal investigation."
"No," Victoria stood up abruptly, her posture rigid as indignation surged through her. "I didn't access those server logs at 3:45 PM! I was in a video conference with the regional risk team from 3:30 to 4:00. David, you were on that call!"
"I know you were on the call, Victoria," David said anxiously, rubbing the back of his neck. "But the digital footprint shows your personal security key. If compliance flags this to the board, your career at Vance & Sterling is over."
"It isn't her key."
A low, authoritative voice cut through the tense room.
Bryan walked into the office, his coat off, his dark tie pulled straight, his expression carved from stone. He stepped directly between Julian and Victoria, placing his formidable frame like a protective shield in front of her desk.
"Bryan," Julian warned, narrowing his eyes. "Don't interfere in a compliance audit."
"I'm not interfering, Julian. I'm correcting your sloppy story," Bryan said coldly. He pulled a flash drive from his pocket and tossed it onto the mahogany table. "Those valuation models weren't leaked by Victoria. I transferred those exact files to an isolated sandbox drive at 3:40 PM using her secondary admin workstation while she was on her call."
Victoria froze, staring at Bryan's back in sheer shock. "Bryan... what are you talking about?"
Bryan turned his head slightly, meeting her wide eyes with a look of absolute, unwavering calm. A silent message passed between them: Trust me.
"I took the files," Bryan repeated clearly, looking straight at David and Julian. "I was running an external cross-verification against the Edinburgh regional metrics. If there was a security flag on the transmission, the mistake rests entirely on my shoulders. Miss Wood had zero knowledge of the transfer."
Julian’s eyes widened with malicious delight, sensing an immediate victory. "Are you confessing to a direct protocol violation on a fifteen-million-pound contract, Walter?"
"I am taking full responsibility for the data movement," Bryan replied without a single second of hesitation. "Victoria’s record is completely spotless. Suspend me if you must, Julian. Exclude me from the pitch. But you will not touch her position, her reputation, or her leadership on this account."
David exhaled a long, heavy breath, visibly relieved that Victoria’s career was safe, though clearly troubled by Bryan’s admission. "Julian, take the drive to IT compliance. If Bryan took sole responsibility for the transfer, Victoria remains cleared to submit the main dossier at 5:00 PM."
Julian gritted his teeth, snatching the drive from the desk. "Compliance will have your formal suspension letter on your desk by Monday morning, Walter." He turned on his heel and stormed out of the suite.
David looked at Bryan with a heavy nod. "I'll do what I can with the board, Bryan. But for now... you need to step away from the floor." He quietly exited, closing the heavy glass door behind him.
The room fell into a profound, ringing silence.
Victoria stood behind her desk, her hands trembling slightly as she stared at Bryan. She knew with absolute certainty that he hadn't leaked those files. Bryan was a master of security protocols; he would never make a rookie mistake like that. He had just deliberately sacrificed his own high-flying executive career at Vance & Sterling to protect hers.
"Why did you do that?" Victoria whispered, her voice cracking with overwhelming emotion. "Why would you take the fall for something you didn't do?!"
Bryan walked slowly toward her desk. He looked at her—not with regret, but with a quiet, profound peace in his eyes.
"Three years ago, when things got hard, I failed you," Bryan said softly, stopping just inches from her side of the table. "I destroyed your trust and let you carry the pain alone. I swore to myself when I transferred to London that if I ever got the chance, I would protect you with everything I have."
Tears spilled over Victoria's eyelashes, warm and unbidden down her cheeks.
"Bryan... your career... your reputation..."
"None of it matters if you get hurt, Victoria," Bryan said gently, reaching out with a slow, hesitant hand. For the first time in three years, he gently wiped a stray tear from her cheek with the pad of his thumb. His touch was warm, soft, and filled with deep devotion. "My career can be rebuilt. But your trust? Your peace? That is worth everything to me."
Victoria looked into his dark, honest eyes, feeling the last remaining walls around her wounded heart crumble into dust.
