Chapter 2All too soon Lionel and his niece waved her parents off. Anne bounced with the excited energy only possible in a kid facing a sugar free-for-all. He, on the other hand, faced nothing but an evening of dread with some additional sprinkles of despair. The door had barely shut behind them before Anne tugged impatiently at his costumed arm. “C’mon, Uncle Lionel, let’s go. I don’t want to miss all the best candy.” He squinted through the eye screens, searching for his niece. When that failed, he ducked his chin toward the gaping, open maw, the better to brood at her with resigned resignation. This costume was ridiculous.
