I'd gotten used to the feeling of chains around my ankles. While the alpha king was powerful, he was auwfully paranoid. He feared me escaping, even though I was but a weak omega raised in a foster home among humans.
But now I know why.
"He's cursed?'' I shook my head, my eyes got bigger, feeling shocked.
"I'm suprised you didn't know. Everyone knows about the Alpha King's curse. Why do you think he's so miserable despite all the power he has?'' Ivyone, one of the servants here in the palace, was a new friend I'd made the last two months. She had stayed with me, helped nurse the soreness of my ankles from the heavy weight of the chains.
"Well then tell me please.'' I urged, curious.
"Well it's simple,'' Ivyone started while she unshackled the chain and pressed a warm towel around my bruises. "Alpha King Aleron comes from a long line of powerful Alpha Kings who had to fight and prove themselves worthy of this power. But for the first time, a king was born without a price on his head and a demand for a test of worthiness.''
"But how would they know?'' I looked at her, intrigued.
"The high priestess, girl, have you been living under a rock?'' Ivyonne laughed.
"Well I've lived in a human town almost all my life. I barely know much about our werewolf traditions.'' I shurgged, feeling belittled. She touched my should. "It's okay. You have me to teach you.'' I smiled.
"It wasn't years after the king was born that the moongodess passed judgement on him. The Alpha King got proud, he felt that he was more than worthy because he was the first of his line who didn't need to proove himself. So, in a rampage, he accidentally led a raid against a small village and killed everyone.''
I was shocked. I knew he was cruel and powerful. But not murdeous.
"Why did he kill them?''
"In Alpha Aleron's rain, he imposed heavy taxes on everyone and opressed omegas the most. He led an army of wolf warriors that went around causing terrors, taking woman for themselves and starting bar fights. That small village, was at the south of the Alpha King's territory, and one day, one of the Alpha's warriors caused havoc there and was killed for miscoduct, as was their tradition. The Alpha King heard about it, and he didn't let them explain what the warrior had done, instead he slaughtered the entire village in cold blood. Every single one of them.'' I felt a shiver run down my spine. It somehow felt like the room had gotten darker, just listening to her. I felt scared. "What the Alpha King did not know was that the next high priestess, whom the moongodess had hand selected to be a messenger between her and the rest of us, was raised in that village.''
"And Aleron killed them?''
"Exactly.'' Ivyonne shook her head. "So the moongodess cursed Aleron. The curse was that he would never know the joy of love or the peace of raising and seeing and offspring happy.''
I paused as I looked at her, taking in her words. "But, he bought me and we struck a deal that he shall give me freedom if i bare him a son.'' Ivyonne looked at me, not saying a word. I wondered why the Alpha King would strike such a deal if he was certain he couldn't have children.
"He fooled you Clara. You're going to be a slave here forever. It's impossible for him to get anyone pregnant.''
That felt like a death sentence. It felt like someone had just sunk a knife into my heart. However, while the news was heartbreaking, it didn't feel as bad to stay here forever. I believe that the king would come to love me. We are mated. There's a bond between us.
"But what do you mean the curse also states that he would never know the joy of love? You don't mean a mate, do you?''
"that's exactly what I mean. He doesn't and will never have a mate. He is all alone.''
"But that's impossible Ivyonne,'' I got up. "I am his mate.''
Ivyonne followed me up at an electric speed. She touched my shoulder, turning me around. "That's impossible.''
"I'm telling you the truth. He is my fated mate.'' We paused, and none of us said a word. The news sunk between us like a secret in the shadows, and with it, the new revelation.
"Perhaps impossible things are possible.'' Ivyonne smiled, as she picked up her buckets. I helped her out the door, then I locked myself in. Her words reckonned in my head like an echo in a cave. There was alot about it. About the curse, and what it meant.
As I stood across the windows, I touched my stomach, and I felt that faint heart beat again. It was small, but it was there. Stronger than ever. The heart of a true wolf. I let out a breath of relief, I wanted to cry.
I knew that I had to tell the Alpha King, but how would I approach that subject when he was yet to know that we are mates? I played a scenario in my head, but the endings were all blurred out. I didn't know what was going to happen.
Perhaps impossible things are possible. I remembered Ivyonne's words, and a glimmer of hope sat inside me.
I was pregnant with the Alpha King's child, and he would finally discover that we are meant to be together, and love me...right?
