Chapter 2: CLAIMED BY THE ENEMY

“Step away from her.” Kael’s voice cut through the night like a blade. Cold. Commanding. Furious. The wolves behind him shifted restlessly, their glowing eyes locked onto me like I was prey. But this time… I didn’t feel small. I didn’t feel like running. Because I wasn’t alone anymore. The man beside me didn’t move. Didn’t flinch. Didn’t even look threatened. If anything… He looked amused. “That’s interesting,” he said lazily. “You reject her in front of your entire pack… and now you come chasing after her?” Kael’s jaw tightened. “That doesn’t concern you,” he snapped. “She belongs to my pack.” Something in me twisted. Belongs. Even after everything… he still said that. “Belongs?” The man beside me let out a low chuckle. “You have a strange way of showing ownership.” “I said step away from her,” Kael repeated, his voice dropping into something more dangerous. The air shifted. Tense. Heavy. Like a storm about to break. I could feel it now. The difference between them. Kael’s power was strong—dominant, familiar. But the man beside me… His presence was something else entirely. Darker. Heavier. Like standing too close to the edge of something you couldn’t escape from. “Or what?” he asked calmly. The wolves growled. Low. Threatening. Kael took a step forward. “Or I’ll make you regret ever setting foot near my territory.” Silence. Then— The man beside me laughed. Not loudly. Not wildly. But quietly. Dangerously. “You?” he said, tilting his head slightly. “Make me regret something?” His tone alone made the wolves hesitate. And then— It happened. The pressure in the air snapped. Power surged outward from him like an invisible force. The ground beneath my feet seemed to tremble. The wolves whimpered. Some of them stepped back. Even Kael… Paused. Just for a second. “Impossible…” one of the wolves whispered behind him. I felt it too. That power. It wrapped around me, pressing into my skin, seeping into my bones. Not painful. But overwhelming. And yet… My body didn’t reject it. It reacted. My breath caught. Why did it feel… familiar? Kael’s eyes narrowed. “Who are you?” he demanded. The man beside me finally turned fully toward him. Moonlight revealed his face completely now. Sharp. Unforgiving. Dangerously calm. “Ronan.” The name hit the air like thunder. The wolves stiffened. One of them took a step back immediately. “Ronan…?” another whispered, fear creeping into his voice. “The Alpha King…?” My heart skipped. Alpha King? Kael’s expression darkened instantly. “So it’s you,” he said, his voice low. “I should have known.” Ronan. The enemy. Everything suddenly made sense. “You’re far from your borders,” Kael continued. “Or are you so desperate you’ve come to steal from weaker packs now?” Ronan smirked slightly. “I don’t steal what’s already been thrown away.” The words landed hard. My chest tightened. Kael’s eyes flickered toward me. For a brief second… Something passed through them. Something unreadable. Then it was gone. “She’s still under my authority,” he said sharply. “No,” Ronan replied simply. “You made sure of that when you rejected her.” Silence fell. The truth hung heavy in the air. Kael had no right over me anymore. He knew it. But he still didn’t step back. “You don’t get to take her,” Kael said. Ronan’s gaze shifted slightly. Not fully to me. But enough. “Take?” he repeated. “No.” His voice dropped. “She chose to come with me.” Every eye turned to me. My heart pounded. This was it. The moment. “Is that true?” Kael demanded, his gaze locking onto mine. For a second… The past tried to pull me back. The memories. The feelings. The bond that once existed. But then— I remembered. His words. His rejection. His laughter. Lira’s smile. The humiliation. The pain. And just like that… Something inside me hardened. “Yes,” I said. The word came out steady. Cold. “I chose this.” Kael’s expression changed instantly. Shock. Then anger. “Think carefully, Ayla,” he warned. “You don’t know what you’re getting into.” I let out a small, bitter laugh. “I didn’t know what I was getting into when I trusted you either.” That hit. I saw it. Just for a second. Then his face hardened again. “He’s dangerous,” Kael said. “You think he’s helping you? He’s using you.” “Of course I am,” Ronan cut in smoothly. I blinked. That… wasn’t what I expected. Ronan didn’t even try to deny it. He turned slightly toward me. “But the difference,” he said calmly, “is that I don’t pretend otherwise.” Silence. “I offer power,” he continued. “Strength. Revenge.” His eyes locked onto mine. “What did he offer you?” My throat tightened. Nothing. Pain. Humiliation. Rejection. That was all Kael had given me. “I’m giving you a choice,” Ronan said quietly. “Something he never did.” My heart pounded harder. And for the first time… I realized something important. Ronan wasn’t forcing me. He wasn’t dragging me. He was letting me decide. “Enough,” Kael snapped. His patience had run out. The air shifted again. This time— Violently. “Last chance,” he growled. “Step away from him and come back with me.” Back? Back to what? More humiliation? More silence? More pretending I didn’t matter? I took a step closer to Ronan. The message was clear. “I’m not coming back.” Something in Kael snapped. “Fine.” The word came out cold. Then— “Take her.” The wolves moved instantly. Fast. Deadly. But they didn’t get far. Because Ronan moved first. I didn’t even see it clearly. One second he was beside me— The next— He was in front of them. A blur of motion. Power exploded outward. The first wolf was thrown back instantly. Another lunged— Ronan caught him mid-air. Slammed him into the ground with brutal force. The rest hesitated. Fear flickered in their eyes. “Pathetic,” Ronan muttered. Kael growled. Then— He shifted. Bones cracked. Muscles twisted. In seconds— A massive black wolf stood where he once was. His eyes burned with fury. And they were locked on Ronan. The ground trembled slightly as he stepped forward. This wasn’t just about me anymore. This was a challenge. Alpha versus Alpha. Power versus power. “Stay behind me,” Ronan said without looking back. I didn’t argue. Because something told me… This was about to get dangerous. Very dangerous. Kael lunged. Fast. Brutal. But Ronan didn’t move. Not until the last second. Then— He stepped aside. Effortless. Kael’s claws sliced through empty air. Ronan grabbed him— And threw him. Hard. The impact shook the ground. The wolves froze. No one moved. No one dared. Because the outcome was becoming clear. Kael stood again. But slower this time. More cautious. More aware. Ronan wasn’t just stronger. He was on a different level entirely. “Leave,” Ronan said simply. Not a command. A warning. Kael didn’t move. Didn’t back down. But something had changed. He knew he couldn’t win. Not here. Not like this. Slowly… He shifted back. His human form returned. His eyes found mine again. And this time… They weren’t cold. They burned. “This isn’t over,” he said quietly. Then he turned. And walked away. The wolves followed. One by one. Until the forest was silent again. I exhaled slowly. My body finally relaxed. But my heart… Was still racing. Ronan turned back to me. “Well,” he said calmly. “That was entertaining.” I stared at him. “You could have killed him,” I said. “I could have,” he agreed. “But I didn’t.” “Why?” His gaze held mine. “Because dead men don’t regret their choices.” My breath caught. That answer… Was colder than anything else he had said. “Come,” he added. This time… I didn’t hesitate. Because there was nothing left for me behind. Only forward. Into the unknown. Into danger. Into power. And maybe… Into something far worse. As we stepped deeper into the forest, the shadows swallowed us whole. And just before we disappeared completely— I swore I felt something watching us. Not Kael. Not the wolves. Something else. Something older. And far more dangerous.
