Chapter 20

The night air was thick with the scent of damp earth and wildflowers, mingling with the lingering energy of the ceremony. As the celebrations continued, I slipped away from the crowd, needing a moment of solitude to process everything that had just transpired. Cassandra's transformation into Lilith was breathtaking, and I felt a swell of pride for her. But my own shift had been a whirlwind of emotions—joy and relief mixed with an underlying uncertainty. Hera, my wolf, was still so new to me. I could feel her presence within me, a powerful force I had yet to fully understand. As I moved deeper into the woods, I closed my eyes and focused, trying to connect with her more intimately. You’re strong, you know, I thought, projecting my feelings toward her. I just need to figure out how to be the best version of myself with you. You are already enough, Hera replied, her voice like a soft breeze rustling through the leaves. Embrace who you are, and I will guide you. Together, we are unstoppable. And don’t forget about me! chimed in Artemis, my second wolf, her tone playful and spirited. I’m here to bring some wild energy into the mix! Wild energy? I thought, suppressing a smile. We just shifted! I think I need a little time to adjust first. Time is overrated! Artemis quipped. Let’s have some fun! I chuckled to myself, grateful for their contrasting personalities. I felt a wave of joy wash over me, but beneath that happiness lay confusion. I could sense the mate bond with Rowan—a warmth that made my heart race whenever he was near—but it was like a door slightly ajar, unable to fully open. Just then, I heard voices in the distance, laughter and excitement that reminded me of the vibrant pack spirit. My thoughts drifted to the ridiculous rumors circulating after the ceremony. I could already imagine them. I heard that you and Rowan are destined for a howling duet at the next full moon, Hera mused. Oh, and I heard he’s already designed your wedding dress out of leaves and vines! Artemis added with a hint of mischief. I rolled my eyes at the playful banter. They’ll say anything to spice things up, won’t they? What’s wrong with a little drama? Artemis replied, her voice playful yet teasing. It makes life more interesting! I guess, I sighed, my heart still weighed down by the uncertainty of my feelings for Rowan. The pull toward him was undeniable, yet the bond felt frustratingly out of reach. Just as I was about to step back into the clearing, I sensed a presence behind me. Turning, I saw Rowan approaching. The moonlight cast a silvery glow on his features, making him look almost ethereal. "Hey," he said, a smile spreading across his face as he stepped closer. "I thought I’d find you here." "Just needed a moment to breathe," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady. "Tonight was... a lot." "Yeah, but it was incredible, wasn’t it?" He leaned against a tree, crossing his arms. "I can’t believe you found Hera. She’s amazing." "Thanks," I said, my cheeks flushing at his praise. "I just hope I can live up to her." "You will. You’re a Lunaris," he said, his tone light, but I could see the sincerity in his eyes. "And besides, I think you’ll be just fine." His presence was comforting, and I felt a warmth spreading through me, despite the nagging disappointment that the mate bond hadn’t clicked into place as I had hoped. I looked into his eyes, searching for that spark of recognition, the one that would solidify what I felt deep within. Come on, bond! Just click already! I silently urged, feeling both Hera and Artemis urging me on. Rowan took a step closer, and I caught a glimpse of uncertainty in his expression. "You know, I’ve heard a few rumors tonight—some pretty wild ones about you and me," he said, attempting to lighten the mood. I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Oh really? Do tell." "Well," he began, a playful smirk on his lips, "I heard that you and I are already planning our wedding. Apparently, it’s a full moon affair, and there will be a hundred wolves in attendance." I laughed, the sound echoing through the trees. "Oh, that’s a new one! I didn’t realize I was such a catch." "You absolutely are," he said, his gaze locking onto mine, making my heart race. "You belong to the moon, and I can’t wait to see what you do next." As our eyes met, I felt that familiar warmth surge through me, yet the mate bond still felt like a distant star—there, but not within reach. I wanted to grasp it, to feel it wrap around us like a warm embrace, but something held me back. Why won’t it click? I thought, frustration bubbling just below the surface. Rowan seemed to sense the shift in my mood. "Hey, are you okay? You look a little… lost." "I’m fine, just… overwhelmed, I guess," I replied, forcing a smile. "You’re not just fine. You’re extraordinary," he said softly. "I can’t imagine how much pressure you’re under, but I want you to know I’m here for you." My heart raced at his words. It felt so right, yet the bond remained elusive. What is blocking us? I thought, desperate for an answer. Maybe it’s just nerves, Artemis suggested. You’ve been through a lot tonight! But I shouldn’t feel like this, I argued internally. I should be feeling the bond fully! Rowan reached out, brushing a stray hair behind my ear, sending a jolt of electricity through me. "Stephanie, if there’s something you need to say, I’m here to listen." The sincerity in his gaze pulled at my heart. I took a deep breath, summoning my courage. "It’s just… I feel this connection to you, and I know you must feel it too, but…" "But?" he prompted, leaning in closer. "But it’s like something is blocking it," I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper. "I can feel you, but it’s not clicking the way I thought it would." Rowan's expression shifted, revealing a mix of disappointment and understanding. "I feel it too," he said slowly, his eyes searching mine. "But I don’t know what’s keeping it from happening." "Maybe it’s just a matter of time," I suggested, grasping at hope. "Maybe we just need to give it a little space." "Or maybe the universe is just playing a prank on us," he said with a soft chuckle, attempting to lighten the moment. I couldn’t help but smile at that. "A cosmic prank. Great. Just what I need." He stepped back slightly, giving me space, but the warmth between us remained. The sounds of the celebration called to us, the laughter and joy of our pack drawing us back into the fold. “Come on,” I said, taking a deep breath. “Let’s join them before they start spreading more ridiculous rumors.” “Good idea,” he replied, and together we stepped back toward the clearing, uncertainty still lingering but hope flickering in its place. As we rejoined the festivities, the warmth of the fire and the camaraderie of the pack enveloped me. I could hear the joy in their voices, celebrating the transformations of Cassandra and me. But even amidst the laughter, a part of me felt distant, torn between my happiness and the uncertainty of my connection with Rowan. But as I stood with him, surrounded by family and friends, I knew one thing: I wouldn’t let this confusion define me. I would embrace every moment, every challenge, and every connection. Even if it took time, I would find my way to the bond I craved. We’ll figure this out, I promised myself, the spark of determination igniting within me. Together, we will find our way.
